- LIVE FROM DENVER: L2 WARS | S7 BONUS
On our final special bonus episode of Rehash recorded live in Denver on March 1, 2024, we’re holding our first ever debate between three major L2 chains: Polygon, Arbitrum, and Optimism. The representatives from each chain are Hudson Jameson (Polygon), Disruption Joe (Arbitrum), and Binji (Optimism).
Each representative gives opening and closing statements about why the layer 2 chain they’re working on is the best one, shares some popular use cases for projects building on their chain, and some even attack other chains in an attempt to win the L2 wars.
This debate is all in good fun, as we all believe in a multichain future and are rooting for the success of all three chains, but we do wrap up the episode by asking our live studio audience to vote on which chain they’re most bullish on after hearing the debates.
At the end of the day, we all want each other to win, and we all want Ethereum to win.

- Unpacking Solana and DeFi Education w/Caitlin Cook | S7 E10
On this episode of Rehash, we’re speaking with Caitlin Cook, Head of Communications and Marketing at Hxro Labs, a distributed liquidity layer for derivatives trading and betting on Solana.
Caitlin is the first guest from the Solana ecosystem that we’ve had on the podcast, so we had to take advantage of this time to ask her all the questions about Solana. Caitlin talks about some trends she’s seeing on Solana that are unique to the ecosystem, why she believes Solana has grown so much, and what role she sees Solana playing in our multichain world moving forward.
Prior to joining Hxro Labs, where she works now, Caitlin was a DeFi educator for about 18 months, primarily educating TradFi institutions about DeFi but also creating educational content for the general public as well, so we chatted about her experiences with that and what she found to be the most convincing narratives for both the general public as well as TradFi institutions to pique their curiosity about DeFi and begin to onboard them.
Finally, Caitlin shared some great insights on the best ways to onboard the next billion users to crypto.

- LIVE FROM DENVER: THE MULTICHAIN WORLD | S7 BONUS
On this special bonus episode of Rehash recorded live in Denver on March 1, 2024, we’re speaking with Irene Wu, Foobar, and Munam about the multichain world.
We start by identifying some of the challenges of building for cross chain interoperability and whether certain tradeoffs will inevitably exist in a multichain world.
Then, we speculate on what a multichain world might look like, how far away from that ideal future we currently are, and what needs to happen in order for us to reach the next billion people with crypto.

- Onchain Media, Culture & Distribution w/Richie Bonilla | S7 E8
On this episode of Rehash, we’re speaking with Richie Bonilla, founder of Forage, about onchain distribution and culture, how to introduce new consumer behaviors, and thinking beyond skeuomorphic models.
Richie is a repeat guest who previously made an appearance on Rehash almost a year ago in S4 E7 where he talked about the future of independent work.
Today, Richie is working on Forage, the easiest way for people to discover and support their favorite onchain projects. You’ll hear us mention his new product as Quests in this episode, but since we recorded this episode, the product has actually been renamed to Forage and you can find it at forage.xyz.
In this highly conversational episode, Richie and I talk through traditional models of distribution in media that have failed us and left a bad taste in our mouth and propose new models of onchain distribution that break down a lot of the assumptions we’ve made about concepts like advertising and ownership.

- Rethinking Community Building Through Crypto Rails w aiio | S7 E7
On this episode of Rehash, we’re speaking with Irina Panovich (aka aiio) about non-linear models for cultural production, the importance of physicality and play when exploring emerging tech, and the importance of experimentation in crypto.
For the last five years, aiio has been experimenting with an arts and tech collective in Copenhagen called 320 Colab, testing out various theses relating to funding for artists and creatives. This is her first time sharing publicly on a podcast about her experiences and learnings from that experiment.
We talk a lot in this episode about experimenting in crypto, especially with community and culture, and aiio shares some key learnings and advice for building a community around foundational values and using human centered design.
She also gives us a sneak peek into a new project she’s working on right now that will be launching soon - a new podcast with UFO that she’ll be using to experiment with new forms and models for podcasting.

- Dissecting Crypto Infrastructure w Eshita | S7 E6
On this episode of Rehash, we’re speaking with Eshita, Head of Strategy at Astria, about the current state of crypto infra, why developer tooling is lagging, and we get to the bottom of what shared sequencers are.
After spending a couple of years researching the crypto ecosystem, Eshita started to feel like a bystander and wanted to become more of an active participant in the ecosystem, so she recently joined Astria to help build out their shared sequencer network.
Astria allows many rollups to share a single decentralized network of sequencers, which increases censorship resistance and enables faster block confirmations, all while allowing each rollup to maintain their own sovereignty.
We then zoom out a bit and look at crypto infrastructure as a whole, and Eshita shares what she believes to be some of the most important pieces in the infra space right now as well as areas where she hopes to see more development and innovation moving forward.

- Unlocking Human Potential w Julia Lipton | S7 E5
On this episode of Rehash, we’re speaking with Julia Lipton, Founder and General Partner at Awesome People Ventures, about unlocking latent potential in humans, finding product market fit in web3 communities, and the most important things happening in the global landscape right now.
In many ways it’s surprising that it took us until Season 7 to bring Julia on the podcast because she has actually played a part in Rehash from Day 0 as you’ll hear us talk about at the beginning of this episode. Julia is an investor, connector of people, and all around one of the kindest and most generous humans I’ve encountered in this space.
In this episode we start out by talking about DAO Masters, a project she crowdfunded through Mirror that ended up winding down last summer, and what she learned about the give-get equation through her experience there. She wrote a really thoughtful Twitter thread about the give-get equation that I’ve linked in the show notes and would encourage you all to check out, especially if you’re someone working in or adjacent to the DAO ecosystem.
We then get into a discussion around why there’s so much latent and unused human talent floating around in the corporate world and what people have been doing about it, such as flocking to freelance and contract work, or even to DAOs. Obviously DAOs aren’t perfect and are far from it, but Julia shares some strategies she thinks could be implemented for DAOs to be more effective in their operations while maintaining the same draw they have for people today.
Finally, we talk about what Julia is most focused on in the global landscape with crypto and nintynick chimes in with a question about progressive decentralization.

- Building, Investing, and Finding Ikigai in Crypto w/13yearoldvc | S7 E4
On this episode of Rehash, we’re speaking with 13yearoldvc, Ecosystem Lead at Eigenlayer, about how she studied 50 projects a day to identify trends as a VC, why she now enjoys building more than investing, and what it is about Eigenlayer that she believes makes it a really special one of a kind project.
“If you can’t explain it to a 10 year old in 2 minutes or less, don’t own it.” -Peter Lynch
Few people in web3 are very good at explaining crypto and blockchain concepts in a way that’s easy for mainstream consumers to understand (myself included), but 13yearoldvc is different. She came into this episode loaded with analogies that make complex topics like staking and data availability and seemingly complex projects like Eigenlayer easily understandable to a 10 year old.
On a more personal note, she shares how she found her ikigai with her work at Eigenlayer now and her best advice for others to find their ikigai. She also shares her best advice for others who want to succeed as a VC or as a builder in web3 or both.

On this episode of Rehash, we’re speaking with Birb aka Chairman Birb Bernanke aka bonecondor on Twitter all about the new Bitcoin ETF and best security practices in crypto.
Birb started her career in TradFi and was a product manager for a number of years before joining OtterSec, a blockchain security audits company. We start out by talking about the Bitcoin ETF, and Birb patiently answers a lot of my very basic questions, like what is an ETF and how is it different from index funds, before we move into more interesting questions like is this a good move for the crypto industry overall and what does this tell us about how the SEC will be treating crypto companies in 2024.
After we figure out what a Bitcoin ETF is, we get into a discussion about security best practices for DeFi protocols and other companies building onchain. Birb shares her best pieces of advice for organizations and for end users to avoid scams and hacks and gives us an inside look into what really goes on behind the scenes of some of these hacks.

- How to Not Get Rekt in Crypto w/DeFi Beats | S7 E1
On our first episode of Season 7, we’re speaking with DeFi Beats aka Johnny Gabriele about how to not get rekt in crypto, why WAGMI is not dead, and his best pieces of advice for newcomers to the crypto and blockchain space.
DeFi Beats is an advisor, investor, DeFi power user, good listener, and self admittedly terrible speller.
He initially had his sights set on getting his PhD and becoming a professor, but when that plan fell through, he found himself in a unique job as part management consultant, part podcaster, and part therapist where he helped numerous people find solutions to problems they were facing across a wide spectrum of areas - from air conditioning to figure skating to life threatening medical conditions.
Today, he has rechanneled his eagerness to help into helping onboard people to the blockchain space and saving people from getting rekt by their inner degenerate. He’s currently building out an AI chatbot called The Crypto Professor that’s designed to help newcomers learn about crypto and stay safe while exploring the space.

- Crypto-Enabled Livestreaming w/Ravi Bakhai | S6 E9
On this episode of Rehash, we’re speaking with Ravi Bakhai, founder of Hypeshot, about why livestreaming is a compelling medium across so many industries, what a crypto-enabled live streaming platform unlocks for creators, and future livestreaming trends we can expect to see in the next five years.
Even though livestreaming has technically been around since the early 1990s, with the very first livestream taking place in 1993 when a few employees from Xerox PARC in California decided to livestream their buddies’ band performance, livestreaming didn’t really pick up steam until the late 2000s or early 2010s when YouTube launched livestreaming and Twitch was born.
Since then, livestreaming has seen a slow but steady growth, primarily in niche communities. More recently, however, livestreaming has been seeping into a wider array of industries and creator types. Now we’re not just seeing gamers streaming on Twitch, but we’re also seeing artists, musicians, and other types of creators in the streaming scene. On the opposite end of that spectrum, we’re seeing big corporations building livestreaming into their corporate marketing and communications strategies as well.
Ravi also shares the latest on Hypeshot, the crypto-enabled live streaming platform he’s building, as well as how some of his favorite streamers have been using the crypto elements there. Finally, we riff on some serious and some not so serious use cases we’d like to see on Hypeshot in the future.

- Ethereum Secrets & Avoiding Burnout w/Hudson Jameson | S6 E5
Ethereum Secrets & Avoiding Burnout w/Hudson Jameson | S6 E5
On this episode of Rehash, we speak with Ethereum OG, Hudson Jameson, about his experiences and learnings from actively working in the Ethereum ecosystem since 2015, as well as his personal story of experiencing burnout and his journey with mental health.
Hudson is a developer who first learned about Bitcoin in 2011 and went on to create and launch the blockchain program at USAA in 2014 and join the Ethereum Foundation in 2016, where he worked until 2021. In 2019 while working at the Ethereum Foundation, Hudson also co-founded the Ethereum Cat Herders, an educational platform and research hub that supports the Ethereum Network.
In this episode, we start off by talking about some of Hudson’s learnings from his time in Ethereum, including what he believes to have been the most pivotal moment in Ethereum history, how the community and culture around Ethereum has changed since 2015, and the biggest learnings from mistakes made during Ethereum’s time that other blockchains or crypto projects can learn from today.
We then get into his takes on the current state of Ethereum and L2s, how he sees L2s interacting in the future, and a new whistleblowing use case for blockchain tech that he would love to see get built out.
Finally, we wrap up with a conversation on dealing with burnout in crypto as Hudson shares his own burnout story that landed him in a mental hospital twice and inspired him to get much more involved in his own mental health journey. It’s a story that is all too relatable to those working in crypto, and Hudson shares his honest and raw thoughts on what we can do to protect our mental health while working in crypto, as well as what institutions and employers can do to support individuals.

- Art NFT Curation in a Bear Market w/María Paula Fernández | S6 E4
Art NFT Curation in a Bear Market w/María Paula Fernández | S6 E4
On this episode of Rehash, we’re speaking with María Paula Fernández, co-founder of JPG and a true OG in the NFT space, about living through another bear market, how to be a good web3 art curator, and new blockchain art projects that should be on your radar.
The last time I interviewed MP was just over two years ago in September 2021. Many of you might recall that was peak bull market times and peak NFT hype. In fact, September 2021 was months before the most expensive NFT sold for the equivalent of nearly $92 million USD in December 2021 and when NFTs saw the biggest volume of sales in January 2022 with over $17 billion USD sold in NFTs. Contrast that to today, when the total sales volume of NFTs last month, September 2023, sat at only $340 million USD, or about 2% of January 2022 sales volume.
MP and I catch up on what she’s been up to since our last recording together and how she’s been feeling amidst yet another crypto bear market - and notably one that feels different from previous bear markets she’s lived through. Even though overall sentiments are a bit low, I can always rely on Maria to bring some humor into the mix, as we come to the shocking realization that Michael Lewis is in fact the new Tom Cruise (tune into this episode and you’ll hear what I mean).
We then dive deep into the world of art curation and what the role of a curator is, especially in the web3 world. MP believes a good web3 curator is a good storyteller and a good educator, and we look at a new JPG exhibit, Generative Art Beyond the Algorithm, as an example of good curation.
Something else I always look forward to and learn from my chats with MP are new artists and projects I should be paying attention to - especially in the generative art and conceptual art space. She mentions a ton of artists in this episode, and I’ve done my best to link all of them or their relevant projects in the show notes below. Two artists MP references in this episode are Sarah Meyohas and Mitchell Chan, who were guests on Rehash S4 E6, and I would encourage you all to go back and listen to that episode for more context on their work.
Also, if you want to learn more about MP’s background, how she got into art and crypto and the work she’s done in the space over the last seven years, you can go back and listen to my previous interview with her from September 2021 on The Unstoppable Podcast.

- Onchain Media: The Next Era of Advertising and Brand Building w/Steph Alinsug | S6 E3
Onchain Media: The Next Era of Advertising and Brand Building w/Steph Alinsug | S6 E3
On this episode of Rehash, we speak with Steph Alinsug, founder of VESSEL, the launchpad for onchain media. We talk about what onchain media is, how we can rethink advertising, and what companies can do with more relevant information on their users.
Steph is one of the few repeat guests we’ve had on Rehash. The first time she was on the podcast was almost exactly one year ago in November of last year, and you can listen to Rehash S3 E10 for more context on her thinking around how web3 media has evolved over the last year.
As it turns out, onchain media refers to so much more than simply putting pieces of media onchain, and its effects can be seen and felt across a wide berth of marketing, advertising, and branding initiatives for individual creators and large corporations alike.
Steph challenges us to rethink what we know about advertising and keep an open mind to new, value additive forms of advertising that can actually benefit consumers instead of the value extractive forms of advertising we’ve all grown to know and not love. She paints a picture of what the marketing stack could look like for companies in the future and the ways in which onchain media can help companies better understand their customers so that they can, in turn, provide more targeted value to their most loyal supporters.

- Monetizing Music With Fail Proof Incentives w/Laura Jaramillo | S6 E2
Monetizing Music With Fail Proof Incentives w/Laura Jaramillo | S6 E2
On this episode of Rehash, we speak with Laura Jaramillo, CEO and co-founder of SONA, about helping artists build a more sustainable revenue, designing fail proof protocol incentives, and using music to onboard the next billion users to crypto.
Like many of us, Laura’s journey into crypto was a winding one with many seemingly mismatched pieces that somehow all came together and are contributing to her work at SONA today. After turning down a deal from a major record label at age 16 to become the next Shakira, Laura decided to pursue furniture design at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design), which eventually led her into product and protocol design and designing what is now SONA, a platform to help musicians monetize their music in a different way.
We do a couple of deep dives in this episode - the first one on how to build a sustainable revenue for artists by implementing crypto and DeFi primitives into a music streaming service, and the second on how to design the most effective incentives for a protocol that’s resistant to spam bots and token miners.
We also talk about her new project, SONA, the super random way in which she met her co-founder, TOKiMONSTA, and Laura and Diana have a full circle moment when Diana realizes that a party she had attended almost a year ago during Art Basel was in fact a party put on by Laura and TOKiMONSTA to celebrate one year of their meeting and the birth of SONA.
If you’re a musician or creator or any kind, or if you have any interest in the creator economy from any angle, you’ll want to listen to this episode. To get exclusive access to check out SONA and sign up as an early user, fill out the typeform linked below.

- Intersection of Onchain and Physical w/Maz & Eiman | S6 E1
On our first episode of Season 6, we have the privilege of speaking with Maz and Eiman, co-founders of Crowdmuse, a platform for multiplayer collaboration on fashion drops and digital IP rights.
Maz and Eiman explain what digiphysical goods are, not just in the context of fashion, but as it relates to any physical item with a digital counterpart, or vice versa. They do an excellent job of explaining what the benefits are for digital goods to have a physical counterpart, why we might need certain products to be stored on the blockchain, and how onchain IP works.
That naturally led into a conversation about consumer crypto because not only is that what all the VCs are talking about nowadays, but digiphysical goods also live primarily in the consumer space. Maz and Eiman talk about how onchain consumer products will change the way we view identity, community, and brands and whether we should expect to see digiphysical goods permeating into all industries, not just the entertainment and consumer space as we’ve seen it to date.
Finally, Maz and Eiman give us an insider look into Crowdmuse, and Eiman answers a spicy question from the community.

- Have We Peaked Yet? w/Raz | S5 E12
On our final episode of Season 5, we’re speaking with Raz about a variety of topics ranging from building games for his siblings as a child to starting his own business at age 14 to forming anonymous relationships online and so much more. Raz is the CEO and co-founder of Guild, a membership management tool that helps you automate requirements, roles, and rewards for your community.
We start off by talking about Raz’s childhood - how he learned to program at the young age of 6 or 7, how he grew up designing board games for his younger siblings because he wasn’t allowed very much screen time to play the computer games he wanted to play, and how his love of all things games - the strategy, the lore, the escape into an alternative universe - all impacted his future decisions and successes as an investor and builder.
Raz made it big back in DeFi summer of 2020 and shares some of his best investment tips with us, like how to identify entry and exit points and how to stay objective in this space. He talks about how investing has helped him become a better builder and some of the things he’s still learning as a successful founder today.
We then get into a conversation around DAOs, how he defines what constitutes a DAO, and whether he thinks DAOs have peaked yet. I ask him about how Guild has been able to strike such a good balance between being a well organized successful company while running on a relatively very flat organizational structure and championing a lot of the ethos of DAO organization that typically tends to lead to chaos, and he attributes a lot of that to the thinking and work of his brother and co-founder, Bruno, who we’ll hopefully get on the podcast next season.
This was the perfect episode to end the season on and definitely one of my personal favorites. And I know I’ve been saying this a lot lately, but the fact is this season was probably my favorite one yet. It’s so inspiring to me that even in the midst of a bear market where sentiments around crypto and web3 are so low that there are still so many bright minds that are still so dedicated to building and furthering the potential that crypto and blockchain can have on the future of the internet.
We’ll be starting our next round of guest nominations and voting in a little over a week, so make sure you’re following us on Twitter @rehashweb3 or join our Discord community so you can stay up to date on all the happenings around that. - Onchain Release Clubs w/Yancey Strickler | S5 E11
On this episode of Rehash, we speak with Yancey Strickler about the problems he sees with the creator economy and why onchain release clubs are a better framing for creative and collaborative work, and we discuss what a post-capitalist world might look like. Yancey is the co-founder of Metalabel and Kickstarter.
We start by envisioning what a post-capitalist world might look like and discussing how practical this model is in the world as we know it today. A lot of this part of the conversation stems from an article he wrote back in 2019 called Post-Capitalism for Realists, as well as his book, This Could Be Our Future.
We more or less agree that while it sounds really nice and idyllic to live in a world where we can all pursue our passions and fully live out our values without worrying about how we’re going to make money from everything we do, the reality is that we all need money to survive, and things are expensive, and it’s therefore an unavoidable part of life (at least in the U.S. and western world) to consider how your passions or objectives can be monetized and to dispense with activities that don’t monetize or at least spend a much smaller amount of your time on non-profit generating activities.
From there, we dive deeper into a conversation around the creator economy - a term that Yancey actually isn’t too fond of, and he explains why in this episode. He prefers to use a framing more analogous to release clubs or labels when thinking about creator collaboration and co-creation.
Even though the creator economy is probably one of our most talked about topics on this season of Rehash, I really appreciate that each of our guests has brought a different perspective to the table. The lens through which Yancey views the creator economy is certainly a unique one, and I’d love to hear what you think after listening to this episode.
Come find us on Twitter or Discord, or write us at rehashweb3@gmail.com and let us know what you think the future of the creator economy will look like. And don’t forget to rate and review this episode on Apple Podcasts and share it with any friends or family members who you think would enjoy listening as well.

- Crypto Economy Meets Creator Economy w/Thomas Scaria | S5 E10
On this episode of Rehash, we speak with Thomas Scaria, co-founder and CEO of one of our sponsors this season, Lore, about the intersection of the crypto economy and the creator economy, why now is not the time to dismiss consumer crypto, and social experiences that can only be enabled by crypto.
As you’ve probably heard me say in past episodes, Lore is the co-ownership platform where you can seamlessly spin up a shared wallet, pool resources, coordinate group activity, etc which all probably sounds a bit vague and abstract.
That’s why I’m so glad we have an entire episode to hear more about some of the use cases Lore enables as well as some of the thinking that inspired Thomas to create Lore.
As we get deeper into our conversation about where the crypto economy meets the creator economy, Thomas weaves in concepts around gaming and financialization into our conversation around creators - topics you don’t usually hear talked about in the same sentence. It really just goes to show how interconnected all of these topics are and how multidisciplinary the web3 space has become.
We also dive into a conversation around consumer crypto, an area that has become somewhat neglected and almost dismissed by investors during the bear market. Having been actively involved in the consumer crypto space since 2018, Thomas brings an insightful and fresh perspective on why now is not the time to dismiss consumer crypto but rather to embrace it from a particular lens.
Thomas does a great job in this episode of illustrating concepts he discusses with real life examples, so you’ll find a pretty long list of projects in the links section below.

- Current State of Crypto Regulation w/Rebecca Rettig | S5 E9
On this episode of Rehash, we speak with Rebecca Rettig, Chief Legal and Policy Officer at Polygon Labs, about the current state of crypto regulation around the world.
This is the first legal and policy focused conversation we’ve had on Rehash in over a year - the last conversation we had on crypto regulation was with Katherine Wu from Archetype and Crypto Council for Innovation all the way back in Season 2.
The main difference I wanted to touch on in this episode (other than just getting a more current take on where crypto regulation currently stands) is getting a more global perspective on how different countries or regions of the world are looking at crypto. Rebecca talks about key pieces of crypto legislation like MiCA (Markets in Crypto Assets) in the EU and FIT (Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act) in the US and shares her perspectives on which countries have the most crypto friendly policies.
We focus most of the conversation on crypto policy, but we do chat a bit on the legal front as well. Rebecca talks about some key court cases we’ve seen recently in the U.S., such as the Coinbase case, and shares her take on what she believes the SEC’s strategy is and what that means for us as people building and working in the industry.
Finally we wrap up with some spicy questions from our community, like how to stay out of jail as someone building in web3 or whether crypto will ever succeed in the U.S.
Rebecca was nominated by Carsten and voted onto the podcast by Justin Conley, Katelyn Donnelly, Zayi Reyes, Meg Lister, Aaron Soskin, David Silverman, anon, and Carsten.

- Collectively Curated Onchain Radio w/Nick Hollins | S5 E7
On this episode of Rehash, we speak with fellow podcaster, Nick Hollins, about the creator economy, web3 communities, and building a collectively curated onchain radio at UFO. Nick is the creator of UFO and co-founder of Apollo, the creative lab that produces UFO.
The creator economy has grown in leaps and bounds since the early 2000s with the introduction of blogging, to Youtube’s emergence, to social media and influencer marketing. The more recent implementation of blockchain technology, cryptography, and what we now see as the overarching web3 space to the creator economy has introduced a plethora of new funding and ownership tools we never saw before.
Creators are now able to directly own and monetize their works, tokenize their intellectual property rights, share revenue with co-creators and collaborators transparently, automate payments, engage with their fans more meaningfully, and much more.
Our guest, Nick, comes from a traditional community radio background in Australia and now uses a lot of his learnings from that world to build UFO, which is aspiring to be an onchain radio and club for creators and consumers of media.
We talk about all of this and more and wrap up with an unexpectedly eerie explain your tweet segment at the end that triggers Diana’s deepest fears.

- Exploring NFTs in Art History w/Blake Finucane | S5 E6
On this episode of Rehash, we speak with Blake Finucane, Chief Strategy Officer at Emergent Entertainment and host of the Context Podcast with Boys Club, about the history of cryptoart and NFTs, strategies for NFT projects to succeed long term, and the role of NFTs in shaping the future of gaming. Emergent Entertainment is a leading metaverse and blockchain game studio.
Blake is one of the earliest researchers of NFTs (non-fungible tokens). While most people started learning about NFTs in 2021, Blake has been studying NFTs since 2016, years before the ERC-721 token standard for NFTs was developed in early 2018.
As a result of her innovative research on NFTs, she received a Canadian research grant to study at University of British Columbia, where she wrote her master’s thesis on how blockchain technology and cryptocurrency can be applied to the art world. It was one of the first ever academic theses to be published on crypto art, and we get to hear firsthand about it from the author in this episode.
We also spend some time talking about web3 gaming and the role of NFTs in games. Blake is currently working on a game called Resurgence through her company, Emergent Entertainment, and she has some refreshing takes about how games should (or shouldn’t) structure their token models if they want to be successful.
Blake has a wealth of knowledge and is so in tune with the culture of the space. She’s taken active steps to strike a balance between work and wellness, and she shares her best advice for achieving a healthy work-life balance while working in web3.

- Onchain World Building w/Peter Pan | S5 E5
On this episode of Rehash, we’re speaking with Peter Pan, partner at 1kx, about how to identify successful early stage web3 projects, why certain NFT projects from the last bull run succeeded while others failed, and how we might be able to simulate real life physics in a digital environment. 1kx is an early stage investment firm that specializes in ecosystem growth.
One of the hardest things to do in this space is to separate the hype from what’s real, and Peter does a great job of explaining how he analyzes various web3 projects to determine which ones will last the test of time. While most investors focus on the standard rhetoric of - you want to look at who the founder is, who the team is, Peter’s thinking goes much deeper into what are the foundational layers of the project and what it’s aiming to accomplish, and what impact can this project have on the broader tech space (not just the web3 space).
We talk a lot about the role of community in shaping the success of a web3 project, and this led us down a rabbit hole of reminiscing and analyzing some of the NFT projects that rose to fame during the 2021 NFT craze. It’s really interesting to look back on some of the NFT projects I hedged my bets on back in 2021 and see where they are today (and how wrong I was about them).
Finally, we talk about autonomous worlds, onchain gaming, and why Peter is a proponent of being able to simulate real world scenarios in a digital sandbox environment. We wrap up with some hot takes on community building that Peter shared in seemingly contradictory tweets back in late 2021 - early 2022 and give him a chance to explain the context in which he wrote those tweets.
