- Ballooning US Debt Poses Significant Risk to Global Economy, IMF Warns
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has sounded the alarm over the United States' soaring debt levels, warning that the country's fiscal deficit is set to triple that of other advanced economies by 2025. In its latest Fiscal Monitor report, the IMF projects that the US will face a deficit of 7.1% next year, posing a "substantial risk" to the global economy.
The ballooning debt is attributed to expansionary fiscal policies that undermine the Federal Reserve's efforts to curb inflation through monetary tightening. Consequently, US inflation rates remain well above the 2% target, with core inflation at 3.8%.
The IMF urges the US, along with China, the UK, and Italy, to address fundamental imbalances between government revenues and expenditures. Failure to do so could lead to increased global interest rates, a stronger US dollar, and heightened vulnerabilities for the rest of the world.
