- The protagonist of this article, Quadratic Lenster, is a brand new social platform that just made its debut in Paris. It magnifies small donations on social platforms through quadratic funding. Yesterday, I made a donation to a friend. By donating just 1 dollar, he is projected to receive an additional 8 dollars from the matching fund.
**Magnifying Donations**
Quadratic Lenster is a new social experiment initiated by Gitcoin founder Kevin Owocki, aiming to integrate quadratic funding with the social platforms people use every day to create a unique social ecosystem. He once pointed out that likes or hearts on social platforms are worthless and are supplied infinitely, making them authentic "shitcoins". Even if people receive a lot of likes, or hearts, they still feel empty. In contrast, receiving small rewards is much more tangible.
Readers from Hong Kong and Taiwan must be very familiar with this concept, as LikeCoin aims to transform likes into rewards. Instead of giving data to the platform with a like, it's better to reward the creators with LikeCoin. The small reward mechanism can be considered the core function of Quadratic Lenster. The difference is that it not only allows people to give small rewards to posts, but also sets up a separate matching fund. People jointly decide who should receive these funds through quadratic funding.
For this event, Kevin Owocki put up 10,000 dollars as the matching fund, attracting people to share high-quality content regarding #ethcc, the Ethereum community conference. The post that received the most fund matching so far received 100 rewards, totaling approximately 306 WMATIC. These 100 rewards came from 16 users, who are expected to receive 4,590 WMATIC from the fund pool, equivalent to about 3,400 dollars, or 100,000 Taiwan dollars.
The fact that a community post can receive 100,000 Taiwan dollars is too tempting! So, I also posted on Quadratic Lenster to test the small reward mechanism. This post has received 5 rewards so far, totaling 4.1 WMATIC. These 5 rewards came from 2 users. Based on these data, this post is expected to receive 21.96 WMATIC of fund matching from the fund pool, or about 500 Taiwan dollars.
But I must admit, one of the donors is me, and the other is a member of the blockchain force, ctting.eth, who I invited to test this new feature. I also asked him to post an article. If you want to test small donations, you are more than welcome to use our articles as an experiment 😂
Readers who participated in the last round of Gitcoin Grants small donations will definitely be familiar with quadratic funding. In the past, people's targets for small donations in Gitcoin Grants were one project after another, but on Quadratic Lenster, the targets for small rewards are posts. It's easier to judge whether a post is worth rewarding than a project, and it's more familiar to people, after all, every like seems like a shitcoin reward!
In addition, most people spend the most time either on social platforms or video platforms every day. Integrating quadratic funding directly into people's daily lives is equivalent to lowering the threshold for participation, and it's less likely to have the strange phenomenon of "money is more important than people", which happened last time when the participation in Gitcoin Grants was too low.
**Quality Over Quantity**
To put it bluntly, Quadratic Lenster hopes to change people's social behaviors through economic incentives, by using quadratic funding.
Currently, media must use sensational headlines to grab attention and generate traffic in order to sell ads. But sensational content would be less popular on Quadratic Lenster. People who feel cheated after reading won't tip at all.
On the contrary, creators who accumulate a certain reputation through their work will receive small tips. They can then obtain generous rewards through the matching funds. This economic incentive also filters out content farms that deliberately mislead for traffic. Ultimately, Quadratic Lenster has the chance to nurture a different content ecosystem that values "quality over quantity."
However, we can also see there are many flaws in Quadratic Lenster's mechanisms. For example, the post that receives the most matching funds may not have the highest quality content, but just the creator with the widest network. After all, quadratic funding values having more people over having more money. If everyone politely chips in small tips, or colludes to upvote each other, it is easy for certain projects to see their matching funds shoot upwards.
Scholars are already actively researching ways to resist collusion. One approach is to distinguish between social relationships, as donations from strangers may be more credible than from friends, since they have less conflicts of interest. But in order to differentiate the closeness of social relationships, there must first be a reliable identity system. This loops back to the sybil attack issue discussed previously.
Aside from identity, determining good and bad content is also not easy. In the past, people would just ignore or block content they didn't like. But if it's a post that can receive matching funds, some suggest adding balancing mechanisms, a bit like social platforms allowing downvotes in addition to upvotes. People who downvote would also have to pay a cost to offset the upvotes.
A platform with only upvotes is like a car with just the gas pedal. Platforms should not encourage people to "race" and go as fast as possible. Braking mechanisms must be added to make the social atmosphere healthier. Of course, opponents would question whether encouraging people to pay to downvote others is really that healthy.
Quadratic Lenster is a social experiment, with many mechanisms and assumptions still to be tested. It's possible the $10,000 matching funds that Kevin Owocki put up will end up being thrown into the water. But that money would not have been wasted. Rather, it experiments with a whole new set of economic incentives for social platforms, the cutting edge intersection of quadratic funding and community platforms.
