*65 years after first contact*
*4 years before Las Vegas’ Liberation*
“How long would it take to make the virus?” Ryo asked over the deafening sound of Pachinko machines. His crew always chatted rebellion in a Vegas Pachinko parlor, where the noise was so loud that even Nuggcorp’s microphones couldn’t overhear.
Eve shook her head. “Ryo, I can’t just modify a micro sub meson electronic component.”
“Why?”
“Because we’d need several hundred acres of multi-story server farms to store that data with terrestrial technology.”
“What if you had machine level access?”
“Of course I could do it with machine level access, but you know nobody can get into a mechabots’ brains like that. If we could…” Eve said, trailing off to glance at a man sitting uncomfortably close at the machine to her right..
The stranger grimaced — or was that an attempt at a smile? — his floppy white mustache curling up unnaturally.
“Eve. This nobody is the Kernel,” Ryo said without looking over.
“Why is he blue?”
“It’s more of a grey, I think. Skin condition. Best not to ask questions where the Kernel is involved. He can get you machine-level access, isn’t that right, Kernel?”
“Yaaaaarp,” agreed the Kernel, croaking out a drawn-out, froglike affirmative.
“Does yarp mean yes?” Eve asked.
“Best not to ask questions where the Kernel is involved,” Ryo repeated.
- Chapter: The Final CoC War | Year 2106
41 years after first contact
30 years before Las Vegas’ Liberation
There’s nothing much to winning a war, not when you have mechabots, thought General Jin. Her colleagues around the convention floor were drunk in celebration as though they had earned today’s victory. As though they were brilliant military leaders.
She was sober. She knew Nuggcorp wasn’t anything special, just the last ones with enough Satoshi EGGs to be a threat.
After all, Lieutenant General Garcia had been in product fulfillment before he was transferred to “Special Conflict Resolution” — a.k.a. the department of indiscriminately blowing shit up.
It doesn’t matter: mechabots win wars because the only thing that beats a mechabot is another mechabot, and nobody can make new mechabots without aliens. And nobody’s seen a Satoshi for four decades.
Today, Nuggcorp was acquiring the last strongholds that had any mechas left. After 22 years of wars, Nuggcorp took over the world with a digital signature.
She was pretty sure this was about as good for humanity as a flying brick is good for a window, but she was just glad that mechabots wouldn’t be kicking peoples’ heads around like deflated footballs.
At least he’ll be born a member of the guild in peacetime, she thought as she felt her unborn son kick. That would have to be good enough for Ryo.
