Writing about the #Cosmos ecosystem...

- Once upon a time, there was a story - a narrative that stirred our souls, sparked emotion, and ignited change. This wasn't a novel; it was the very fabric of our existence, the story of fashion.
Fashion, more than fabric and threads, is a living, breathing chronicle we proudly wear. Each stitch whispers a thousand words, and every garment tells the tale of who we are, what we stand for, and the passions that set our hearts ablaze. Fashion speaks when words fail, a silent orator crafting stories uniquely ours.
The true authors aren't designers, tailors, or retailers; it's us, the people. We weave our stories through the books we read, the music that moves us, and the clothes that define our style.
Every conversation, every garment, every heartbeat emanates from a story. Stories possess the power to move mountains, shatter barriers, and rebuild the world anew. They're woven into the very fabric of our existence, shaping our reality and influencing our lives.
Mismir exists to amplify these stories. We take narratives, breathe life into them with graphics, and give them a voice through garments. Our desire is to spark conversations, inspire change, and echo the voices of dreamers yearning for a different world. When you wear Mismir, you're not just wearing fashion; you're embodying a story, making it yours, breathing life into it, and inspiring those around you.
Each of us has a story longing to be told, a voice yearning to be heard. We understand the feeling of insignificance, the notion that our voices are too small. But now is the time for a change. With Mismir, your stories will resound, your voices will reverberate, and you'll be the change you wish to see in the world.
We aren't just a fashion brand; we are a symphony of stories. We don't chase trends; we chase tales. Delighting in the narratives woven into the fabric rather than the fabric itself, we are the co-creators of your stories.
We are Mismir. We are a story.

Fuck it, I'm releasing my NFT project today.
It's called Garden 🌼
Garden is first and foremost an experiment.
It's an adventure. It's a tribute.
It's a memorial to all the incredible innovators, builders, artists and creators experimenting on the cutting edge.
Garden is an NFT magazine.
It's an outlet for my creativity. It's a way for me to share the stories, learnings, successes, failures, tears and joys of the fearless human beings who risk failure and embarrassment for the hope and dream of building something incredible.
It's a way to stay up to date of the developments in the Lens and Web3 creator and developer ecosystem.
Explore and learn from creators, app builders, artists, VCs and more with this one of a kind, first ever NFT magazine of its kind.
Be warned. This is an experiment.

Today, I want to do a recap and feedback of an amazing thread I read today on the blue bird app (who must not be named). The author, Edgy - The DeFi Edge, claimed it took weeks to research and write. Well done sir. Lets dive in…
It highlighted “13 narratives you should watch in 2023” and I saw two familiar faces right away (Cosmos and Lens). But I was really curious as to the others. I’ll do a list of the 13 and then share my feedback.
Thirteen web3 narratives in 2023 in their opinion:
1. Tokenized Real World Assets
2. NFT Finance
3. Cosmos Chains
4. Sei Chain
5. Zk-rollups
6. Arbitrum
7. Celestia
8. Perp Protocols
9. Decentralized Sports Betting
10. Decentralized Social Media
11. Decentralized Stablecoins
12. Big Brands in Web3
13. ETH Liquid Staking
Bigger themes in their opinion:
✅ Decentralize everything
✅ Specialized blockchains
✅ Tokenize the real world
✅ New approaches solving the blockchain trilemma
Overrated in their opinion:
❌ GameFi
❌ Crypto AI
❌ Solana
*Now my final comments, I wanted to highlight some neat things in or related to this thread:*
✅ Yes, dYdX is coming to Cosmos.
✅ Yes, native USDC is coming to Cosmos.
✅ Yes, Sei is coming to Cosmos.
✅ Yes, Celestia is coming to Cosmos.
✅ Yes, Lens was showcased as a frontrunner in web3 social.
✅ Yes, we are early.
✅ Yes, we are gonna make it.
Hope you enjoyed. If you’re interested in learning more about these narratives (such as specific projects), I strongly recommend reading the entire thread. I can’t wait to continue to learn more about these. Follow me @mattwilson.lens for more Cosmos content.

- What is a smart contract? Click to expand the article and find out. 📄
👇 👇 👇
Smart contracts are programs or applications that run on the blockchain. Is that confusing? Lets dig in together, piece by piece.
✅'Programs or applications’ - think of an app on your phone or computer. Software developers, also known as programmers or engineers, write computer code, which are basically systemic instructions. Apps are made to do something specific and can be small or large. For example, think about all the different apps on your smartphone. Something as simple as a calculator or more complex as your favorite app for trading stonks like Robinhood. Gotta get them tendies.
✅‘On the blockchain’ - this means that the apps (code that does stuff) are deployed on smart contract compatible blockchains. Instead of apps, we call them dapps because the apps are decentralized. They are decentralized because developers deploy the code to the network of blockchain nodes which maintain the code for use by the users. Also, it is decentralized because the smart contract code (not a person or group) is responsible for the behavior of the application as you interact with it. While there may be a person or group who developed the dapp, the real time behavior is purely based on the code.
✅So lets stop and summarize —> apps in web3/crypto are call dapps because they are decentralized. The more formal/technical name for dapps is smart contracts.
Now you may ask, why are smart contracts important.
Web3 is built upon the premise of security, accessibility, reliability, and transparency. And removing the need for a intermediary for peer to peer transactions. This is especially important in the case of smart contracts. Bitcoin was great because it pioneered peer to peer transfers. BUT there was no sophisticated logic on top. With smart contracts, we now have complex and scalable applications for things like DeFi (decentralized finance). No bank to trust, no private companies (cough cough FTX) or OTC risk. Smart contracts are what enable things such as ERC-20 tokens (like USDC) and NFTs (like Bored Ape Yacht Club). Smart contracts also enable things like swapping tokens on DEX (decentralized exchange like Uniswap). Or creating your first art collection on the blockchain using an NFT launchpad (e.g. OpenSea).
✌️Hope this was helpful! If you enjoyed reading this, give me a follow to keep up with my future writings.

🪐Fun fact about the history of the ⚛️Cosmos⚛️ blockchain ecosystem. 🪐
🛰️Did you know this?🛰️
🚀Click below to continue reading.🚀
Jae Kwon invented Tendermint in 2014. He continued working on improvements with Ethan Buchman over the next two years through the company, All in Bits Inc. before receiving some initial funding in mid-2016.
Later in the fall of 2016, Votem, an online voting platform engaged All in Bits for a cool project. Votem wanted to use a Tendermint blockchain for the Fan Vote of the 2017 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees. It was important to make the voting process secure and reliable.
The project was a huge success breaking the record for blockchain voting turnout to date, with more than 1.8 million votes from all 50 states and 100 different countries. Incredible. How cool is that!
This was the year that Journey, Pearl Jam, and Tupac were inducted.

- Lens Community,
As we kick off the new year, I wanted to share an incredible piece that I came across, which inspired me to think about how we might experiment with ways to relate online in 2023.
https://www.robinsloan.com/lab/new-avenues/
Its as if this article was written for us with this opening line - *"It’s so powerfully obvious to me, it might as well be written in ten-foot letters of flame: the platforms of the last decade are done."*
Some tips from the article:
- Try the new new new thing (always!!)
- Think deeply about discovery online
- Climb into an overlay
- Make a thing with which you can talk about the thing
Thank you to everyone here in our beta who invested their time and energy experimenting & exploring with us last year. We hope you enjoyed the journey as much as we did. We started out with just a few active users, and now I struggle to keep up with all the cool stuff happening here (I am loosing sleep)!
It's thanks to you, our early adopters, that we've gotten this far!
*"The good stuff is always lonely in the beginning. Nothing meaningful will get made if its potential makers all wimp out too soon, because they get scared by the sparse crowd, the empty room."*
Let's continue to build for the long term...*"The timeline isn’t settled."*
Don't forget to scroll to the bottom of the article 😉

I feel left out at this point having not posted my highlights of the year, and quite the year it has been. Listed them in order in which they happened. Enjoy!
~~~~~
✅ VeeCon // Minneapolis, Minnesota // May 2022
What is VeeCon? It is an annual web3 and business conference held by the well known Gary Vaynerchuk. Gary launched his NFT (VeeFriends) in 2021 with the promise of three years admission to his IRL (in-real-life for you normies) conference. And it was a blast!
It took place in the U.S. Bank Stadium where the NFL Vikings play. There were many different stages around the conference with a variety of great speakers. I had never been to Minneapolis before and I enjoyed it a lot. Almost 7,000 people attended VeeCon and it was great to connect with so many likeminded community members in one place.
BTW the pic is a recently revealed 1/1 physical VeeFriend that Gary drew that all attendees were able to claim a % ownership which was also really neat.
✅ Cosmoverse // Medellin, Colombia // September 2022
What is Cosmoverse? It is an annual conference for the Cosmos ecosystem. Most of the major projects were represented. I learned so much at this conference from the speakers/presentations as well as just wandering around to all the booths learning about all of the projects.
This was another place that I was traveling for the first time. Medellin is incredible. I can’t wait to go back. But I am not sure where next years conference will be. Crossing my fingers, the same place. Oh yeah, almost forgot I got to go on a helicopter ride! How cool! Check out the pic.
✅ Art Basel // Miami, Florida // December 2022
What is Art Basel? Well a long standing (50+ years) traditional art fair that takes place in all the major continents, and in North America that is Miami. And web3 has sort of take over you could say. I specifically wanted to go for web3 so I’m a good example of that! This was my second year going. You saw a lot of NFT projects last year, but this year it was back to back to back with fun events and parties! So much fun! My favorites included World of Women Gala, Lens Creator meetup, painting with Gary V x VeeFriends, painting with FEWOCiOUS (pic!), and an arcade party with Alien Frens.
In today’s episode of ⚛️ Cosmos Content ⚛️, I would like to share a few interesting things I stumbled across. Click below to continue reading to find out.
I was scrolling Twitter and kept seeing many of the common ‘2022 top moments and highlights’ and found a few for the Cosmos ecosystem.
Cryptocito, a popular Cosmos content creator, said “Cosmoverse Medellín was my ABSOLUTE HIGHLIGHT of 2022!” I was one of the 1500 that was in attendance in Medellín for the annual Cosmos conference and can confirm it was incredible. The atmosphere and energy from everyone was strong, even in a bear market. Crypocito also pointed out the epic moment when Jacob Gadikian, a Cosmos developer, received an Osmosis tattoo at a late night afterparty. Moral of the story here, is make sure to mark your calendars for Cosmoverse 2023.
➡️ https://twitter.com/Cryptocito/status/1608871603953360897?s=20&t=Q2CFG-Z00NoOrrvBatr35A
➡️ https://twitter.com/Cryptocito/status/1608875249143275521
Next I saw one from Thyborg who works at Informal Systems, a core contributing team to the Cosmos ecosystem. They opened a series of polls via a twitter thread for various categories of app chains for the year 2022. Here were the results. Although almost 600 folks answered for each poll, there are always unhappy folks in the comments. The results are still interesting! Take a look…
🏆 Most successful exchange of 2022 ➡️ Osmosis with 67%
🏆 Most successful smart-contract platform of 2022 ➡️ Juno with 50%
🏆 Most successful infra project of 2022 ➡️ Axelar with 71%
🏆 Most successful liquid staking of 2022 ➡️ Stride with 81%
🏆 Most successful NFT marketplace of 2022 ➡️ Stargaze with 94%
There will also be a final round tomorrow where these category winners go head to head for the champion. Best of luck. I would bet Juno or Osmosis take the grand prize.
➡️ https://twitter.com/Thyborg_/status/1608083685282127872
Another thing I found from Thyborg was in their bio. “Curator-in-chief of the Interchain Reports http://datastudio.google.com/s/oQsFJ_1CTGI "
Wtf is this, I think to myself. Sure I’ll click the link even though my momma said not to click links from strangers.
I was surprised to find a lot of information on this page. I can’t wait to go through all of it and share what I learn, but that will be for another day. See you tomorrow Cosmonauts. ⚛️
What are popular 🔒non-custodial wallets🔒 in the ⚛️ Cosmos ⚛️ ecosystem ??
Click to continue reading and find out !! ⤵️ ⤵️ ⤵️ Let the Wallet Wars begin! 🧙♂️
Full disclosure, I have selected these wallets because they are popular in the community in addition to being Cosmos and IBC focused. This is not an endorsement for any of these projects. I hope to share the pro’s and con’s of each to help anyone getting started in Cosmos. Remember to always to DYOR.
If any of these terms/acronyms don’t make sense, go check out my last article which is sort of a glossary for beginners to the Cosmos ecosystem. You can find that here : https://lenster.xyz/posts/0x018ab6-0x1f
✅ Keplr
Website: https://www.keplr.app/
Twitter: https://twitter.com/keplrwallet
Wallet Type: ☑️ Browser Extension; ☑️ Mobile Application; ☑️ Web Dashboard
Details: Keplr is a popular browser and mobile wallet (for both iOS and Android). They have integrated all of the major Cosmos IBC chains so it’s easy to switch networks and transact. The web dashboard is great too; easy to use and visually appealing. It shows your assets across all Cosmos chains in one place, including the bonded vs un-bonded metrics. The dashboard also lets you participate in governance and also see all the validators for a particular chain. That comes in handy from time to time. I’m a fan on the dark mode as well. Light mode users are NGMI. Also, their twitter bio is dope. Go check it out. Overall 5/5.
✅ Leap
Website: https://www.leapwallet.io/cosmos
Twitter: https://twitter.com/leap_cosmos
Wallet Type: ☑️ Browser Extension; ☑️ Mobile Application
Details: Leap is another popular Cosmos ecosystem wallet. They also have the browser extension and mobile wallet applications. It has very similar features as Keplr. I am not seeing a dashboard but they do have a a similar expand feature which allows for more options such as governance, stake, etc although in a view that is only slightly larger to the browser extension popup window. Overall 4/5.
✅ Cosmostation
Website: https://cosmostation.io/
Twitter: https://twitter.com/IBCwallet
Wallet Type: ☑️ Browser Extension; ☑️ Mobile Application; ☑️ Web Dashboard
Details: Again, much of the same here. Pretty decent features and layout. The web dashboard is nice, but I will say it is not nearly as slick as Keplr. It’s a rigid look and feel and it does not have any of the fancy metrics and visualizations. Overall 4/5. What is interesting is the top block explorer in Cosmos is also by the same group, https://www.mintscan.io/cosmos. A lot of the dashboard links point to that site which is convenient for research. https://hub.mintscan.io/chains/ibc-network <— This site by them is also cool which is similar to map of zones site with the IBC visualization and data.
So as it stands right now, Keplr is my favorite. Let me know in the comments which Cosmos wallet you like the most! (And why of course!)
Hope this was helpful. At some point, I want to do a more detailed tutorial and review of each of these. But until then, be sure to follow me @mattwilson.lens for more Cosmos content. See you next time!
Another day, another Cosmos article! How familiar are you with the Cosmos ecosystem!
⚛️👇 ⚛️👇 ⚛️👇 ⚛️👇 ⚛️👇 ⚛️
~~~~~~~
There are a lot of new and unique terms, and acronyms in the Cosmos ecosystem. Here is a list of them. Let me know in the comments if you learned something new today or if you knew them all.
✅ Cosmonaut - strangely the textbook normie definition is a Russian astronaut. But in Cosmos, this is what all the participants call themselves and each other. Plus some bonus points! This is the (unofficial) emoji ⚛️ of Cosmos which you’ll see all over twitter in folks names and bio’s.
✅ Cosmos - an idea, concept, and ecosystem. Cosmos is collectively the idea put into reality of a multi-chain world. Generic or app chains, permission-less or permission-ed chains, the ‘Cosmos’ is a network of interconnected, independently managed and validated chains. Sub-components of the Cosmos can be detailed out in terms below this.
✅ Cosmos SDK - the modular framework that Cosmos chains are built with. SDK stands for software developer kit. The modules refer to the code for particular pieces of functionality. For example, there are modules for Authorization, Banking, and Governance. By the way, this is where chains have the ability to make customizations. Maybe modifying an existing module or adding a new one altogether. I am not a developer, but this is my understanding. And any custom or modified modules wouldn’t be as easy to upgrade with the global patches and versioning to the SDK.
✅ Tendermint - “Tendermint is both a consensus engine and a BFT consensus algorithm. State-machines can be built in any programming language on top of Tendermint, which takes care of replication.” Had to steal this one out of the text book! I am not that technical and not going to pretend to be. Check the diagrams here : https://docs.tendermint.com/v0.34/introduction/what-is-tendermint.html I also found an awesome video on the subject. Highly suggest watching this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFiLxS7f1Lo
✅ ABCI - “The Application Blockchain Interface is a protocol that connects a state-machine and a consensus engine like Tendermint.” Again, a bit too technical for me to try to explain. But as I understand ABCI is the middle layer between Tendermint (for producing blocks and consensus) and the application layer (smart contract logic).
✅ Cosmos Zones - a zone refers to a chain. So think of them as cities around the world or houses in a neighborhood. I can’t remember who initially made that analogy but you get the point. Map of zones is a website that has a really cool, interactive visualizer for all the Cosmos ecosystem. Seriously check this out, its so cool. https://mapofzones.com/
✅ Cosmos Hub - this was the first Cosmos chain/zone. ATOM is the native token. It served as the proof of concept chain for the entire Cosmos ecosystem. After its success, many other chains began to pop up. It does not have much utility aside from being an token onramp from many major exchanges. That may change as more utility and functionality is being discussed to be implemented such as Atom 2.0 and Interchain Security (see next entry).
✅ ICS - Interchain Security basically allows other chains to use another chain to perform block validation. Neutron is the first chain to test this feature. Neutron’s chain uses the Cosmos Hub validators to secure the network. Excited to continue to monitor that project. This has a lot of benefits because it reduces upfront costs and time because they do not have to enlist a brand new validator set. As well as reduce overall overhead for the new chain. This also increases the utility and demand for the parent chain.
✅ Interchain Foundation - from their website the ICF “core teams maintain the protocols and applications Cosmos Hub, Cosmos SDK, CosmWasm, CosmJS, IBC, and Tendermint Consensus.” That’s quite a lot to be honest! I also learned that this entity is setup as a non-profit in Switzerland. Some more fun facts! The first major milestone for them was launching the Cosmos Hub and here is how the first round of tokens were distributed: 5% of the ATOM went to its initial donors, 10% went to the Interchain Foundation, 10% went to the company developing most of the software (Tendermint Inc.), and the remaining 75% to be distributed according to the results of the private and public fundraisers.
✅ ICNS - this stands for the Inter Chain Name Service. This is sort of similar to ENS but a bit different at the same time. Where ENS is the Ethereum naming service. The ICNS has the interchain in mind. Even though each chain has a different ‘account’ (public address), the ICNS gives you the ability to have a single identity. This is formed as your ‘account’+’.’+’chain’, so for example matt.cosmos (for Cosmos Hub) and matt.osmo (for Osmosis). Another unique approach taken was to use Twitter usernames as an initial snapshot of whitelisting specific usernames. This project was just announced this month so stay tuned as to how much this will be utilized by the community.
✅ App Chain - part of the cosmos vision is empowering projects to launch app specific chains. This is great for the builders (able to have more inputs to optimize for the specific use case) and the users (able have lower transactions fees). For example, Osmosis is a DEX dApp chain.
✅ Bonded / Un-Bonded - Bonded is another word for staked. So I’m sure you’re realizing un-bonded is another word for un-staked. Cosmos chains are proof of stake networks. Bonded tokens give you the right to vote on governance proposals and earn network rewards. For example, bonded ATOM gives you the ability to vote and receive rewards in the Cosmos Hub.
✅ IBC - Inter-Blockchain Communication. This is one of the core selling points of the ecosystem. This gives you the ability to send tokens from chain to chain, in a decentralized, fast, secure manner.

- ⚛️ What are the top 5 projects in Cosmos? ⚛️
👇Keep reading and I will share!👇
In case you’re wondering “What is Cosmos” then go check out my last Lenster article on the subject before reading on. You can find that here : https://lenster.xyz/posts/0x018ab6-0x15
There are many ways to measure the size and success of projects such as the number of transactions or the number of users. But to keep things simple I will be using market cap for ranking this list. Going from fifth to first place, I will list each project, the associated token and market cap, important links, a description, and any interesting nuggets I find. The only other criteria I will use is that the chain or projects chain must be IBC enabled. These are what I consider truly worthy to be on such a prestigious list such as this one. As my last article highlights, there are 40+ IBC enabled Cosmos SDK chains, and I consider this is one of the most important parts of the Cosmos tech stack. This will rule out others such as Binance BNB Chain and Luna Classic. Strap in Cosmonauts; lets enter the Cosmos!

5. Kava
Token: $KAVA
Market Cap: $252M
Twitter: https://twitter.com/kava_platform
Website: https://www.kava.io/
Overview:
Coming in strong at 5th place is Kava. "Kava is a decentralized blockchain that combines the speed and interoperability of Cosmos with the developer power of Ethereum.” OK cool, but what is that? Because I simply just copied that from their website but am now curious. I already promised to ELI5 so that’s what you’ll get.
Kava is built for DeFi and uses a co-chain architecture. There is a Cosmos co-chain and an Ethereum co-chain (see the attached to this post). This has two major benefits. First, this allows for developers to build comfortably in their respective knowledge base. Ethereum developers can easily build and deploy dApps because the the Kava Ethereum co-chain has an EVM compatible execution environment. And the same for the Cosmos SDK and it’s co-chain. Second, it attracts liquidity and users from both broader ecosystems.
There are a lot of well known projects building upon Kava and their foundation announced $750M Developer Incentive Program in March of 2022. Total Value Locked (USD) is at $174.46m.
~~~~~~~~
4. Osmosis
- $OSMO
Market Cap: $372M
Twitter: https://twitter.com/osmosiszone
Website: https://osmosis.zone/
Overview:
Next at number four. Osmosis is the largest decentralized exchange (DEX) in the Cosmos ecosystem. It is running on its own dApp chain and is IBC integrated to all the other Cosmos chains. It currently has Total Value Locked (USD) $157.15m. Most of the major pairs are with the native OSMO token. And there are also a lot of OSMO incentivized pools as well as others with external incentives.
Fun fact, Osmosis liquidity peaked at null.8 billion USD in March of 2022 but is now sitting at about ~$150M USD. Their app is slick and easy to use, having used it a several times.
~~~~~~~~
3. OKExChain
- $OKT
Market Cap: $441M
Twitter: https://twitter.com/OKCNetwork
Website: https://www.okx.com/okc
Overview:
“EVM & IBC-compatible, OKC is a L1 blockchain network built on Cosmos that aims for optimal interoperability and performance.” Ok a bit of the same as Kava it seems. So lets dig in a bit further as to what makes OKC unique.
Already as an established CEX, OKX launched their own chain, OKC. Sounds similar to what Binance has done with BNB. Exchanges launching chains have a lot of opportunity to become successfully because they can quickly and easily attract a large pool of liquidity as well as builders and users. OKC also has a huge number of dApps deployed on the chain.
~~~~~~~~
2. Cronos
- $CRO
Market Cap: null.5B
Twitter: https://twitter.com/cronos_chain
Website:https://cronos.org/
Overview:
“Get Instant DApp Portability with EVM Support.” Great, another cosmos EVM compatible chain. What’s different about this one? Well, Cronos is brought to you by crypto.com and also is claiming to be the first EVM compatible Cosmos having launched back in November 2021. Which might be why it is priced more favorable than OKC and Kava or even other newer ones like Evmos which didn’t make this top 5 list.
Cronos is an open-source and permission-less network which already has a large number of dApps in the ecosystem. “Cronos’s base settlement currency is CRO, the native token of its parallel blockchain, the crypto.org Chain.” Ok so this is where things get weird - why are there two chains? I found an interview which I included in the notes which explains this. In summary…. crypto.org is a Cosmos chain optimized for performance of fast payments and transfers of NFTs. But it is not programmable although it is efficient and cheap to use. Where as Cronos is permission-less and programmable, so developers can deploy their dapps. Ken Timsit, the Managing Director of CRONOS, describes Cronos as the “community chain”.
~~~~~~~~
1. Cosmos Hub
- $ATOM
Market Cap: $2.61B
Twitter: https://twitter.com/cosmoshub
Website: https://github.com/cosmos/gaia
Overview:
Drum roll please 🥁
The Cosmos Hub is first in the list! It was the first Cosmos chain and it initially served as a proof of concept for the entire ecosystem. It is still considered to be trailblazing the Cosmos SDK in terms of new features and future versions, which all of the Cosmos chains are using. It launched in March of 2019 with the native token ATOM. The community is strong and active even through this bear market. There is a lot to cover in future articles, so I’ll stop here. For example I need to get into more details of the history of Cosmos as well as the recent governance proposals such as the Atom 2.0 getting rejected. Other cool things too such as Interchain and Mesh Security.

Hope you enjoyed. See you next time.

- Are you ready to enter the Cosmos? Prepare for takeoff!\n\n👇 Click 🚀 Show👇 More 🚀\n\n\n👇 To ⚛️ Learn👇 How ⚛️\n\n\nThis is the first of many educational writings that I’m going to release about the Cosmos blockchain ecosystem. Spanning from: \n\n- What is Cosmos?\n\n- What are all these weird terms? (like seriously, WTF is a Cosmonaut?) \n\n- When and how did it start?\n\n- What are the latest developments? (i.e. drama and there is a lot!)\n\n\n\nBy the way, @mattwilson.lens is not just for Cosmos content. I may also post dank memes from time to time. Really here just to vibe with my #LensFrens\n\n\nI am writing these to continue my learning as I still feel like a n00b in Cosmos even after about 3 months in the space. Also, I hope to share what I learn with you all. I try to write things in an easy to understand way. As a non-technical and very chilled out person, I write how I speak and so I’ll try to ELI5 for the most part. And include fancy pictures of course.\n\n\nMy background and an obligatory disclaimer. I am currently contributing to a project in the Cosmos ecosystem which, as you are about to learn, is a vast space. My posts are not a promotion of any particular chain or project. My posts are for educational purposes only, and this is not financial advice.\n\n\n\nToday we will start with a bit of the basics, such as what is the Cosmos, how is it different from other blockchains, and why should you care. Well, I can answer the first two but the last one ehhh, that’s in your hands, not mine. Lets dig in.\n\n\n\n~What is Cosmos?~\n\n\n\nCosmos is not a blockchain so to speak. It’s actually a proof-of-stake, smart contract blockchain framework (or more specifically an SDK) 🤯 woah dude, are you serious? Yes. It was termed the internet of blockchains back in 2016 (wait a second, who had this tagline first, Cosmos or Polygon? 🤷♂️…. not the point). Also, it is described as a layer 0 blockchain which is something we’ll come back to. But simply said, there are lots of Cosmos chains, not just one. The reason I start with this is because I have seen many times people associate Cosmos as a whole with just the first chain, the Cosmos Hub, that launched in March of 2019 with the native token ATOM. In reality, there are currently 50+ blockchains in the Cosmos ecosystem. Each chain has their own independent validators, use cases and native token. We will dive into the history in another article, but hopefully that sets the stage as we now move into what makes it a unique ecosystem.\n\n\n\n~How is it different?~\n\n\n\nSo most are familiar with major layer 1s such as Bitcoin and smart contract platforms like Ethereum. The problem with the first iteration of smart contract blockchains was scalability. Ethereum has scaled with layer 2 block chains which allow for much more throughput and retaining much of the security of the layer 1. Simply put, they are scaling vertically. Cosmos is different because it is scaling horizontally. So instead of rolling up transactions, they are dispersing them across infinite adjacent blockchains. And Cosmos has a native feature called IBC (Inter Blockchain Communication) which means each chain can communicate directly with one another, otherwise known as interoperability. So this includes sending tokens from chain A to chain B quickly and securely (faster than bridges) - and this even includes multi-chain smart contract transactions (amazing right?). This type of architecture has really enabled and brought to reality the long ago vision that we will live in a multi-chain world. Not one to take them all.\n\n\n\nCosmos participants (also known as Cosmonauts!) call this the ‘app chain thesis’ which gives projects the ability to develop and configure a blockchain to their custom specifications, in most cases for a particular use case. Or even a general purpose permissionless chain similar to ETH. These app chains have full utilization of their block space for the particular purpose, e.g. an NFT launchpad and marketplace does not have to share blockspace with a very transaction heavy DEX. This makes the experience as a user, creator, or developer much more affordable to use or contribute to the network.\n\n\n\nBy the way, we are talking about leading edge tech stack here which we will get into in another day. Fast, secure, and reliable, which is a reason top projects like BNB, CRO, LUNC also use the Cosmos SDK. And according to a source below Cosmos chains have a total combined market cap of more than $52 billion USD right now from 71 apps and services. And those using IBC (the fancy chain to chain talk) have a total market cap of more than $6 billion USD across 46 chains. Pretty good for a bear market, you should’ve seen it before.\n\n\n~The End (for now).~\n\n\nHope you enjoyed. I’ll be back soon to post more fun and interesting things about the Cosmos ecosystem. Feel free to drop your thoughts and questions in the comments below.
