- Crypto Gambling Giant ‘Stake’ Faces $41M Hack
The hack was first alerted on Monday, September 4th with some suspicious outflows on ETH, BSC, and Polygon.
Stake later confirmed the hacks and were able to return operations to normal within a few hours. But the damage is clear.
Fast Facts 🏃♂️ 💨
👉 Stake was hacked on September 4, 2023, resulting in the withdrawal of $41.35 million in cryptocurrency.
👉 The hack affected Stake's hot wallets on Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain (BSC), and Polygon.
👉 The stolen funds were converted to ether (ETH) and transferred to several externally owned wallets.
👉 Stake has confirmed the hack and said that it is investigating the incident.
👉 The company has also said that it will reimburse all affected users.
👉 The hack is one of the biggest in the history of crypto gambling.
👉 It is still unclear how the hackers were able to access Stake's hot wallets.
👉 Stake has said that it will increase its security measures to prevent future hacks.
Potential Market Implications 👀
👨⚖️ Increased regulation of crypto gambling
🔐 Increased operational fees to cover the costs of added security measures
The Silver Lining 🤷♂️
With or without overt public interference, companies like Stake will be forced to discover new ways to improve security measures and boost user experience so this doesn’t happen again.
Plus, if bettors are more aware of the risks of crypto gambling with big headlines like this, maybe people will make more informed decisions about where to gamble their money?? Probably not lol.

- **GM.** Some big updates in tech this week that could have a MASSIVE impact on the market through ‘24.
First, a court updated its ruling on Spot Bitcoin ETFs. Big opportunity there. In the private sector, a major exchange launched plans to target the world’s second largest population. In the mainstream world, Elon’s X dips another toe into crypto.
With payment licenses approved in 7 US states, X is also updating their TOS to include employment history and biometric data. Is the X super app a crypto advocate or another Big Tech wolf in sheep’s clothing? 🤔
Without Further Ado. ☕ **knuckle cracks** ☕ Let’s get into it. Today's newsletter below
- It’s New Era for Social Media in Europe 📲
The Digital Services Act officially goes into effect on Friday, fundamentally changing the way Europeans experience their Internet lives.
Here are a few new features for EU users:
📺 You can now turn off AI-recommended videos
🚩 You can easily flag harmful content
🔬 You will receive clearer explanations about why your posts are removed
🛍 You will be able to quickly report fake products and services
🎯 Children cannot be targeted with digital ads
How (we think) things will shake out:
While the US may be the global leader in developing transformative technology, Europe is the global leader in regulating it. Expect other developed economies (including the US) to eventually follow suit on these rules if things start to go well.
I think we can all agree on basic standards; 13 year olds shouldn’t be targeted like an informed consumer.
Having the choice to opt out of Meta’s artificial intelligence ranking and recommendation systems, for example, is another powerful way to offer users a chance to take control back of their Internet lives.
Listen, some people prefer to be targeted like a 50s factory worker in Soviet Russia so they can seamlessly get offers for their next favorite shoe. I’m not saying we should ban it. Let’s just make it optional.
- Less than two years after a $333M valuation, web3 darling child RECUR is shutting down operations. Here are a few highlights:
💰 Raised a $50 million Series A
📈 Sold over 380,000 NFTs
🤝 Scored mega-partnerships with Viacom
This one feels personal. You had everything any web3 startup could ask for – A-list partnerships, blue chip venture funding, NFT revenue, and you managed to build nothing of value???
Here’s a short list of notables names involved in the Recur debacle, just to highlight how pathetic this is:
Mark Cuban – Shark Tank Host / billionaire
Winklevoss Capital Twins – Facebook cofounders / billionaires
Joseph Lubin – Ethereum / Consensys co-founder
Nickelodeon (Viacom) – yeah ik
Delphi Ventures – blue chip crypto VC
Steve Cohen / Point72 – Mets owner / billionaire
Gary Vaynerchuk – VeeFriends founder / prominent internet personality
Hello Kitty – yeah ik
Recur joins the growing graveyard of crypto failures with the likes of Nifty’s and FTX. RIP Recur – you won’t be missed.

- Decentralized social app Friend.Tech broke 100K users this week (or at least 100K wallets). Let’s dive a little deeper on the latest crypto hype.
Fast Facts
📲 Friend.Tech has over 100,000 wallets signed up since its Aug 10 launch
📲 The platform has generated over null.1 million in fees
📲 Major (non-crypto) celebrities like streamer FaZe Banks and NBA player Grayson Allen have made accounts
📲 The platform allows you to buy “shares” in popular X (Twitter) accounts.
Where it’s going:
Who remembers Bitclout? Is that still a thing? There are only two potential outcomes from here:
1. Friend becomes the new gold standard for speculating on the social prowess of influencers and public figures
OR
2. This fad fades in the next 6-12 weeks, and 1-5,000 people who made a little bit of $ on the app will blindly advocate for the app until its inevitable demise
I don’t have a crystal ball, but I’m leaning toward **#2** on this one. We’ll check back in around Thanksgiving to see if we’re right. *sets reminder on phone*

- Hacker Drains Stablecoin Pools 🫢
Several stablecoin pools have been drained by hackers on one of ethereum’s largest Defi protocols, Curve Finance.
**The Curve Finance Hack**
Curve Finance, a popular decentralized exchange (DEX), was hacked over the weekend for *an estimated $52 million*.
The hack was caused by a vulnerability in the Vyper programming language, which is used to write smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain.
The hackers exploited the vulnerability to drain three liquidity pools on Curve Finance, as well as a pool on the layer-2 solution Arbitrum.
South Korean crypto exchange Upbit has temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals of CRV tokens as a precautionary measure.
The Curve Finance team is working to mitigate the damage caused by the hack, and they have advised liquidity providers to exit the affected pools.

- **A closer look at Lionel Messi's crypto sponsorship with XBTO**
Messi signed a multi-year sponsorship deal, reportedly worth $4-5 million per year,
with crypto market-making and venture capital company XBTO. Who is XBTO? Tbh, we work in this industry full time, and we don’t really know either. Their website claims they offer “institutional access to digital assets.” Scam likely???
The deal includes Messi wearing the XBTO logo on his Inter Miami jersey. That’s really it. But it’s still kinda funny to see another athlete associate with a crypto company after Tom Brady completely fumbled a $50M bag last year with FTX.
Sooo XBTO is a relatively unknown company, but it hopes to use the sponsorship to increase its brand awareness. I mean, it’s probably going to work. The timing of the deal was fortuitous, as it was signed before Messi's move to Miami was announced.
It’s just a little cringe because Miami is the same city with an arena called FTX, after all…
- Web3’s favorite messaging app introduces ‘Stories’
Telegram’s Stories feature is now live – for premium users only (sigh). Telegram touts the new feature as “highly anticipated” but did we really need another app with stories?
Here are some of the features they are testing:
**Customizable Privacy Settings**
Users can decide who sees their stories, choosing from four different options: everyone, only your contacts with exceptions, a few selected contacts, or a list of close friends. This part we actually like. Take notes Zuckerberg.
**Flexibility and Hidden List**
You have the option to hide stories posted by any contact by moving them to the "Hidden" list in your Contacts section. No need to watch a bunch of stories from some loser you met once at a networking event. We like this too.
**“BeReal” Cam**
Telegram lets you post photos and videos taken with both front and rear cameras simultaneously. Cool? Sure. Game-changing? Probably not.
**Choose Your Story's Lifespan**
Telegram offers various options for your story's lifespan. You can choose to have your story expire in 6, 12, 24, or 48 hours. Alternatively, you have the option to keep the story pinned permanently until you decide to remove it. Okay we like this too.
As of now, the Stories feature is exclusively available to Premium users, and there’s no word on when us proletariats will get to see it. Honestly the features they are testing do sound cool, but another app with stories just seems like overkill.
What do you think??

- Coinbase Launched Messaging, But No One Will Care 🚥
Coinbase Wallet is introducing a new messaging feature that is end-to-end encrypted, private, and portable.
I’m already overwhelmed keeping up with Whatsapp, Signal, and Telegram. And Coinbase thinks we want another messaging app? These product ppl need to take a sixth vacation and touch some grass.
Core product features:
👉The messaging feature is powered by the XMTP protocol, which allows users to connect directly through their wallets and send payments across thousands of coins.
👉Its only rolled out to small subset of users, including all Lens protocol users
You can message anyone with .eth, .cb.id, or .lens addresses, or connect with other holders of the same POAP via token-gated messaging.
👉With messaging, you can also pay others using any crypto asset supported by Coinbase Wallet.
Here are a few reasons why I think the new messaging feature from Coinbase Wallet is a bad idea and no one will use it:
🥱Signal, Whatsapp, and Telegram already have billions of users and are products built around messaging. That’s what they do. Why not integrate Coinbase Wallet into an already proven app to acquire a new user base??
🥱Coinbase users want more coins and tokens, lower transaction fees, smoother user experience to make P2P transactions. Let me add a note to my buddy when I send him some ETH. I don’t need to message him in another app.
🥱There is no incentive for users to switch to this messaging platform from the ones they are already using.
TLDR; Coinbase messaging is a poorly thought-out idea. It won’t work. There are too many barriers to adoption, and the feature does not offer anything that users cannot already get from other, more popular messaging platforms.
Coinbase Wallet would be better off focusing on improving its existing features. Improve your dead NFT marketplace or incorporate more DeFi utility.
These are areas where y’all have an actual competitive advantage, and they are more likely to attract users than a new messaging feature.
We’ll revisit this topic in three months and see if we’re right 🙃🙃

- Web3 is going invisible... this is the year when projects who overspent/overhired can't raise their next round and drop off for good.
Only projects left will be the ones with strong web2 partners, scalable market utility TODAY (not tm) and people who made like bandits in the bull and saved conservatively enough to have a sustainable treasury to keep iterating / R&D without depending on more investors.
The segmentation of web3 versus traditional tech is over. AI, Blockchain, XR, and the like will converge back into the overarching umbrella of "tech". Blockchain will be at the epicenter of this next tech wave, of course. But no end-user (like your younger sister or 70-year-old mom) will have any idea they are using it.

**Will Amazon win the NFT wars??**
We don’t think Blur or Opensea are the NFT marketplaces of the future. We think it’s Amazon.
Yes, Chad-era Bezos is cringe af. But the biz is primed to scale NFTs in a way that OpenSea and Blur simply cannot compete with.
Why we’re long on Amazon in the NFT wars:
**Royalties**
We lost the plot when we stopped enforcing royalties
Pretty sure we’ll see a new option that enforces royalties take over the market. I think we all miss when teams had a direct financial incentive to keep working.
Royalties also align financial incentives with teams and holders. They’re overall good for the ecosystem.
**Amazon is just better.**
Amazon has direct access to 200 million subscribers that can seamlessly integrate NFTs into their shopping experience.
Their customer experience and engineering team are equipped to grow at scale.

- I wrote an article about the role of AI in Music back in September 2020. Here's what I had to say:
AI mimics, humans imagine
At least for the foreseeable future, AI is incapable of creating music without mimicking an existing data set that originated from human innovation. At some point, you can input tens of thousands of hours' worth of music and get something entirely original.
In other words, Artificial Intelligence would create something entirely groundbreaking in the arts, independent of human creativity. But as technology exists today, AI in music is limited by the genres, keys, and time signatures that define its rules.
Sure, Jukebox AI can bust out a Luke Bryant hit single in 30 seconds, but that hit single is based on the previous works of Luke Bryant. Artists don’t produce new music like that.
Finding inspiration in experiences
Consider the Beatles after India, the Grateful Dead after Egypt, or even the dark influence of heroin over John Coltrane. Those human experiences instigated new definitions and new perspectives for their music. Humans — musicians — artists are not linear thinkers. We derive inspiration from current and past events, abstract ideas, and unexplainable moments where words of poetry and musical phrases scream at our minds.
You can’t input “traditional Indian folk music” and “Revolver” (the album that preceded the Beatles’ trip to India) and expect a “Within You Without You” Beatles masterpiece. Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour wrote “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” after his former best friend Syd Barrett lost his mind to LSD and schizophrenia in the 1960s.
Bob Dylan wrote his brilliant “Masters of War” in response to the Vietnam War, or “Blowin’ in the Wind” in response to the civil rights movement, with the powerful line, “How many roads must a man walk down, before you call him a man?”
The list goes on and on. In contrast, new music produced with AI would use “Blowin’ in the Wind” as its source of inspiration rather than using a life experience to spark new ideas.
Those experiences could be something as deep as losing a parent or as simple as walking past a cute girl. Those are the moments that manifest history’s greatest ballads.
Improvisation sweats and breathes
No one is looking to pay money, as far as I know, to watch a live 26-minute robot rendition of Scarlett Begonias / Fire on the Mountain. But 43 years later, 3.5 million people still want to listen to this one. There is something magical and timeless about improvisation in music. Even when mistakes are made, it somehow amplifies the fan-musician relationship into a deeper, more intimate understanding.
Jerry Garcia was well-known for forgetting lyrics, cracking his voice or missing notes. Some of the Dead’s most famous shows came from when Garcia was too sick to sing, so he had to jam extra well to make up for the lost voice. Those moments are inherently human.
A choice for computer-music could never be as authentic and clumsy as its flawed anthropomorphic alternative. Now to think of it, just last week my guitarist broke a string during an outdoor gig. We laughed and the crowd cheered. Isn’t that the beauty of it all? A deeper meaning for music Creativity stems from inspiration; it is not programmed or confined by the boundaries of linear thinking.
Live musical performances, for example, are designed by the present moment that music is being produced. The creative expressions put forth by a collection of human-manipulated instruments depend on the bad food we ate that morning, the nasty fight we got in the night before, the painful sunburn we got that afternoon, the family tragedy we faced that year.
All of those loves, losses, break-evens and wins are scrambled together into one medley outburst of raw emotional creativity. No code could match the unpredictable interface between an artist’s heart, mind and soul.
Let’s look at jazz music: the archetype of human improvisation, a genre entirely based on impromptu creativity.
John Coltrane, the legendary saxophonist who battled with drug addiction his entire life, performed “My Favorite Things” differently each time. But any musician who has performed in a band understands that the varying directions of his saxophone solos were based on the drummer’s fills, the bassist’s grooves, or the pianist’s chosen melodies. It all sort of happens in one simultaneous telepathic “this is how we feel right now” that constantly changes with each player’s tap, hit, blow or pluck.
Using AI to amplify music
Similar to the way AIVA pitched their product, Artificial Intelligence can be used to help the artist speed up and maximize the composition process.
If I want to write a folk-electronic song (think Mumford & Sons + Avicii), I could plug in what that may sound like, and the machine would give me a great foundation and source of inspiration that didn’t previously exist before this technology. Apply that same philosophy to writing lyrics.
In a commercial sense, business execs can rely on a machine to generate a catchy jingle. Yet, do decision-makers know what jingles work best for their business? A professional musician can take an AI-generated song and take it a step further, adding that much-needed hot sauce to an otherwise dry burger.
There will always be a place for bipedal fleshbags in the arts. With or without AI in music. Why? Because the consumers of creation are also fleshbags, and we want to be wowed and wooed by the hairy, smelly creatures that feel and squeal just like we do.
