**Celebrate your achievements!**
Jake's Pointers is celebrating our 100th post!!
It was not easy coming up with creative, useful posts for 21 straight weeks, but it was worth it.
I hope at least one pointer has helped you.
**If you have an idea - a dream - pursue it.**
After a long/melancholy day, I had absolutely no desire to sit and create a post.
But I was determined to make it to 100.
**And before you know it, I did.**
**Thank you for all your support.**
**Believe in yourself!**
- 🧠 **Mindset** 🧠
**Perspective is everything.**
≈ 2 billion people around the world do not have access to safe drinking water and
≈ 1 in 2 people (3.6B) lack adequate sanitation services according to the UN.
**You are lucky:**
If you can depend on an ambulance to arrive when you need one.
If you can count on the hospital to have the supplies and medicine needed to save your life.
A UK charity found fewer than 1 in 5 people have ever flown on an airplane.
Have you flown this year?
More than once?
**You are fortunate.**
**Be grateful.**
Try and spend 5 minutes a day being grateful and appreciative. It's healthy to be ambitious, but you **also need to reflect on what you have.**
See Linktree for references.

- **⚠️ Rules to Live By ⚠️**
**Treat yourself (within reason).**
Say the chicken costs $15 and the steak $20. If you love steak and haven't had it in a while, treat yourself to it. Remember, your happiness is worth a few bucks - just be smart.
You work hard in school, at work, for your family...
**You've earned some rewards.**
Costs must be considered, but so too must your joy.
**You can be smart and be good to yourself.**
Find the number that works for you and use it as your limit.
Ex: If the extra cost is < $10 you can splurge and get it.
- **★ Essentials** ★

- 🧠 **Mindset** 🧠
**The Missing Shade of Blue**
**Can you imagine things you've never seen?**
A woman has seen all colors, except one particular shade of blue. She has seen all other gradations of blue, so if she arranged them in her mind, she'd see a gap. **Would she be able to fill in the missing blue using only her imagination?**
Philosopher David Hume published this thought experiment in 1737 as a **counterexample** to his idea that we humans understand and think about the world only through experience.
**If the woman can** successfully visualize the missing shade, it challenges the notion that ideas are derived solely from prior sensory experience. This suggests the existence of innate or imaginative human elements.
**If she can't** fill it in, it supports the idea that our ideas ultimately derive from our direct sensory experiences. The significance lies in the extent to which our minds can generate new ideas beyond what we have directly experienced. Is it possible?
- 🖥️ **Technology** 🌐
**Clean up your photos.**
Your photos app is a collection of your entire life. Keeping it useful and organized only requires two things: 1) deleting and 2) labeling (captions).
**1) Delete the unwanted**
Searching "May 15" in the photos app will reveal photos from all years. Now delete what's not wanted. Do this every day and in a year, your photo album will be clear.
**2) Label (caption)**
Labeling allows you to search and instantly find a photo. No more scrolling! With a photo open, swipe up and write a caption.

**Embrace your inner child.**
Take a moment and think back to your early years. Stop and remember. You are that same kid that played tag at recess, lived for LEGOs, and believed in the tooth fairy. **It’s still you.**
Watch an old movie (Bolt, Hercules, Air Bud).
Eat a Lunchable.
Swing on a swing set.
Draw on the kids' menu.
Climb a tree.
Make a knock-knock joke.
Be amazed at a cool stick.
**You're still a kid a heart.**
**Now act like one (a little).**

- 🗣️ **Communication** 🗣️
**Storytell.**
Stories are a powerful way to convey your message and connect with your audience. Use anecdotes and examples to make your message relatable and to keep listeners interested.
How do you share a story? Weave it in, like a spider.
If you're discussing rising prices, tell a story about a struggling parent.
Share a sports team's challenging journey to show perseverance.
- **⚠️ Rules to Live By ⚠️**
**Give thanks to those who helped you.**
No one gets anywhere alone. Your coaches, teachers, family, mentors, and friends sacrificed and stressed for you. Thank them for their kindness, guidance, and support.
When you're celebrating your job offer, don't forget to thank the folks who helped you find the job, practice for interviews, and guided you to the finish line.
Jake's Pointers wouldn't be possible without my other half. Thank you Kasasi for your unwavering support and encouragement. **I couldn't have done it without you.**
- 📜 **History** 📜
**Crazy History Facts**
During WW2, a Great Dane named Juliana extinguished an incendiary bomb by peeing on it, earning the Blue Cross Medal.
In 1952, Albert Einstein was offered the presidency of Israel. Although it is mostly a ceremonial position, he politely declined.
The most valuable entity in history is the Dutch East India Company which had a monopoly on the spice trade. Today, they'd be valued at $8.3 trillion. That's 8.3 x 10^12
Before being crowned Pope Pius II in 1458, Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini wrote a bestselling erotic novel called "The Tale of Two Lovers".
Ketchup was originally sold as medicine! Ohio physician John Cook sold it in 1834 as a remedy for stomach problems.
- ❤️ **Relationships** ❤️
**Shower them with compliments.**
Praise your partner. Not only do many people go days without a compliment, but a compliment from someone you care about feels extra special.
Compliments can be about anything:
Your apt is so clean!
Dinner was delicious.
You have great cursive.
You play the best music.
**Compliment friends and family too.**
- 🔎 **Basics** 🔎
**The Tenth Man Rule.**
**The Tenth Man Rule** = In a group of ten, if nine people agree on an issue, the tenth person should take a contrarian viewpoint and assume the others are wrong. The 10th plays devil's advocate.
Assumptions may be wrong.
Events thought of as unlikely may be likely.
**The impossible may be possible.**
The opposite may be more efficient, faster, less risky, more popular... better.
The Tenth Man’s job is to challenge conventional ideas. They are to look at things creatively and independently. They are to hound others on any flaw, irregularity, or major assumption.
- 👫 **Friends** 👫
**Call them.**
So it's "their turn" to call you back. Assume they meant to, but an emergency came up.
Take the high road and call them: resume the friendship.
If after two tries, you hear nothing, then ok. But at least you tried.
- **⚠️ Rules to Live By ⚠️**
**Live honorably.**
Honor means doing the right thing every time you're able to. An honorable life doesn’t require a grand gesture, instead it means doing right in your everyday life.
Give up your seat to someone who needs it.
Tip your Uber driver.
Pick up a littered bottle.
Hold the door (Hodor).
Don’t cheat.
**Offer help if you see someone in need of it.**
The world is a fragile place, held together by trust. The next time you can do the right thing, do it. **Remind the world, even just one person, there is good out there.**
- 🍪 **Baking** 🍪
**The Best Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe**
Binging with Babish has my favorite recipe. I only make one, important, change: I use bread flour instead of AP for a thicker, chewier cookie.
Big things to keep in mind:
1) don't under brown the butter (check for rich aroma)
2) refrigerate the cookies
3) both white and brown sugar are needed (white for texture, brown for sweetness).
Binging with Babish owns and reserves all rights. This is an educational post.

**Top Items at Trader Joes**

**First Aid Readiness**
It's important to readily be able to treat things like a minor cut to something serious.
It's a scary world.
Plan ahead.
**Be ready.**
The Red Cross provides a complete list (linktree), but here are some everyday essentials:
1) Band-aids
2) Neosporin
3) A thermometer
4) Essential meds / EpiPen
5) Antiseptic wipe packets
Today, portable first aid kits are relatively inexpensive. See the linktree in the bio for a full kit < $20.
- ❤️ **Relationships** ❤️
**Have shared activities with your partner.**
Share a music playlist.
Reserve a show - something only watched together.
Jointly read a book.
Volunteer together.
Bike in tandem.
Studies show that couples that engage in shared activities are happier and last longer.
It can be anything, just make sure you're both enjoying it.
- **⚠️ Rules to Live By ⚠️**
**Prepare.**
If something is important, thoroughly prepare before it happens. An email, assignment, meeting, event, even a date... think about what you'll need to do and then get ready.
Ex: Meetings
Even if you're just a member in a meeting, read the email chain, research the topic, and formulate 2 questions. Transform this ordinary occurrence into a notable moment.
**If it's of value to you, know your success starts well before the event.**
Not sure where to start? Genuinely think about: Who? What? When? Where? & Why?

**Seek feedback.**
What are your thoughts on these posts?
Do you prefer short ones?
More Images?
Fewer advice posts and more fun facts?
Do you like the design?
It's extremely useful and healthy to get feedback from your customers, boss, and whomever's opinions affect your life. A monthly or quarterly meeting works great.
**How can Jake's Pointers best help you?**
Please comment your thoughts. Every opinion will be read and considered.
- 🔎 **Basics** 🔎
**Your rights.**
Can you name the 5 freedoms guaranteed in the 1st Amendment?
Every person has freedom of speech, religion, assembly, the press, and the right to petition the govt.
The 4th Amendment protects you from “unreasonable searches,” meaning cops can't search you without probable cause. If an officer ever asks, "Can I search your __?", **respectfully say NO**. You're innocent until proven guilty, meaning you have nothing to gain from a search.
The 5th Amendment protects your right to remain silent,
while the
6th Amendment protects your right to counsel (a lawyer). Always, always, always w**ait to speak until a lawyer is by your side.** Remember, you start out innocent: it can only get worse.
- 🧠 **Mindset** 🧠
**Take the road less traveled.**
"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." - Robert Frost
Regardless of the poem's intended interpretation, consider journeying on the road less traveled. The bumpy one, the spicy one, the other one.
If you walk home the same way every day, try a new path 1x a week. Try one street over, through a building, around a park...
If you always order the same Chipotle bowl, do one thing differently the next time you get it. Get veggies, try the salad dressing, add hot sauce...
**Choose any adventure, but make it a new adventure.**
- **⚠️ Rules to Live By ⚠️**
**Invest in your passions.**
Baking, knitting, Halo, Arsenal, architecture... invest in the things you love. **Do more than observe. Get involved.** Not sure where to start? Explore any and all ideas.
Ex: Interior Design -- If you watch a lot of AD, make a YouTube playlist of your fav videos, have a notes tab with your top designers, start a blog...
Ex: Chicago Cubs -- If you watch a lot of games, write down highlights, Tweet, publish a monthly newsletter... anything. Whatever you want.
Consistent investment will bring immediate joy. The journey may even lead to places you never imagined: a new career, a side business, a fanbase, events...

- **🧘 Self-Care 🧘**
**Keep a small stash of medication in your bag.**
