- strategic planning + having fun this week in ericeira!
- thrilled to announce that we're one of the 14 teams selected for the @avax Codebase accelerator!
over the next 3 mos we'll reach our next stage of growth with the support of world class mentorship and grant funding 🚀
the finale? pitching 100s of investors at @consensus2024
last week we had the program kick-off in Lisbon. couldn't say better things about the @avax team, and the other projects they selected for this cohort. we're really excited for these months to come. cheers, friends 🥂
- searching for mass adoption, have you seen it?
- re-entering my soylent phase
- everyone (#starknet, @lens/fluence, +) deciding to airdrop their tokens to the @lens/ElectricCapital list of web3 github contributors is my favorite plotline of this cycle so far.
let's make the devs rich they deserve it.
- Is me! I was featured on @lens/graphprotocol #GrapHER podcast repping @lens/TalentLayer and sharing stories of my entry into web 3💡

Bonus, get the TLDR on what's new with TL:
TalentLayer is an open protocol and developer toolkit for building better service marketplaces, powered by The Graph 👩🚀
Thanks to TalentLayer's modular toolkit, Freelance Search was able to go from idea to working application in less than 10 days and currently ranked the #1 freelancing app on the ChatGPT store 🤯
- Remember to donate during @gitcoin.lens #gg18! https://explorer.gitcoin.co/#/round/10/0x8de918f0163b2021839a8d84954dd7e8e151326d
- Many of you have probably been hearing about @gitcoin.lens "quadratic funding" grants round happening now. Is this your first #QF round? No worries. It's TalentLayer's first one too! We'll figure it out together...
Let's start from the beginning, what on earth is quadratic funding?
Quadratic funding (QF) is new type of crowdfunding that uses enables small donors to have a big impact...
1. A matching pool is created
2. Donors donate to projects
3. A quadratic formula is used 2 match funds: in this formula, smaller contributions get more weight
For example, if a project receives 200 donations of $10 each, this project would earn more matching funds than a similar project that receives 20 donations of $100 each. This makes match funding more fair - based on how many people care about an issue, and how much they donate.
So now you understand quadratic funding. Remember @gitcoin.lens? They are one of the OG QF pioneers. OGQFPs if you prefer.
#Gitcoin has been running major #crypto #quadraticfunding rounds for years, funding some of the most famous protocols in the ecosystem back when they were just small baby #opensource projects (see @optimismdao.lens as a great example)! Today, Gitcoin has helped deliver over $50,000,000 in grant funds.
Yesterday Gitcoin opened the #GG18 #quadraticfunding round - with over 300,000 in DAI earmarked for opensource software.
I'm happy to share that @talentlayer.lens is one of the 105 teams selected for this matching pool!
TalentLayer exists because of grants. Our open-source dev is 100% funded by #grants & #incubators!
Opensource #software couldn't exist without a thriving community of individual donors; now, small donors can have a big impact thanks to quadratic funding!
How far will your #donation go?
- it's happening! @gitcoin.lens #GG18 is live, and we've been selected to be a part of the #opensourcesoftware #quadraticfunding pool - with 300,000 DAI in matching funds!
and we're not alone - 105 opensource projects are a part of this matching pool! here are some of our top picks. there's no better time to support your fave opensource softwares!
@lenster.lens - our friends at #lenster
@lenstubelogs.lens - #lenstube powering the decentralized video economy
@giveth.lens - #giveth an OG crypto donations platform
thebadge - #thebadge a decentralized oracle for certification
daostar - a consortium of DAOs collaborating on gov standards, run by
#metagovernance collective

- To truly obtain freedom, we need to have #sovereignty; ultimate and un-confiscatable authority over our lives. The ability to make decisions for ourselves, free of coercion.
In the realm of work, sovereignty translates into having complete control over how you make income, to the extent that your earning ability is resilient amidst outside forces.
Work sovereignty is made possible when your #**reputation**, built over time, is trusted by enough people to make finding new work easy.
**Your ease of finding new work is a matter of…**
1. **Your perceived reputation**, based on data available and it’s quality
2. **Who can access your reputation data** and what they can do with it
Without work sovereignty, the ability to acquire new work whenever you please can be taken away from you by nation-states, employers, and job platforms. They may revoke work permits, terminate your employment, or even ban you from accessing certain platforms that help you find new partners.
**Unfortunately, most people today do not experience work sovereignty. This is due to some big design flaws in how we collaborate today.**
**It's a problem of how we’ve scaled work globally.**
Reputation is hard to scale. It always has been.
In the past, the people that we could work with were limited to our personal network: the people that we knew directly, and their respective networks, as long as they were willing to vouch for **our reputation**.
**What is reputation?** Reputation is the cumulation of data on an individual, as interpreted by others. It can include information like work history, reviews, education history, transaction history, and a virtually endless set of other data points. It is inherently subjective based on context and circumstance. It is ever-changing as new data is added.
So far, it's only been possible to scale beyond these brain-powered reputation networks through "trusted" intermediaries.
Hiring networks, freelance marketplaces, ride-share apps, babysitting platforms, food delivery platforms and an endless number of other work platforms are the middlemen of our era.
**Today, trusted intermediaries provide us with three key services:**
**+ act as a guarantor of our reputation**
**+ connect us with people beyond our network**
**+ facilitate and secure payments**
These third parties helped us scale work, but they came at a cost.
These platforms put our reputations at risk.
Due to the #centralized nature of these intermediaries, a person’s ability to earn is always at risk. **Our reputation, our access to work, and our income have been put in someone else’s hands, and can be taken away at any time.**
All Russian citizens were blanket banned from the popular freelance platform Upwork in 2022. They woke up finding their contracts abruptly ended and their reputations pending deletion.
In Canada in 2022 we saw that in less than 24 hours thousands of individuals who donated a few dollars to truck drivers can have their permit to work revoked, lose access to their bank account, and be cut off on major communication platforms.
These platforms also fragmented our reputations.
**No one has a clear picture of who we are and what we’ve done**. This is because most workers and hirers can’t find enough people to work with on one platform alone, they are forced to make accounts on many.
Have you ever seen a driver switching from Uber to Lyft to find more rides? Or a freelancer using 3-4 platforms to find enough work? “Multi-homing” is a well-known phenomenon on hiring platforms, caused by people not finding sufficient partners on one platform.
With each new account users create, they start their reputation from scratch; oftentimes having to lower their rates in order to get their first work. **People’s work opportunities are limited by the accessibility of their reputations.**
Why does the world work like this?
Why are we relying on these intermediaries that hold so much control on us?
It’s not a global conspiracy. Relying on middlemen was actually the best option that we had to scale human coordination.
They were the most efficient way for people to find each other, facilitate payments and scale our reputation, even at the cost of renouncing to our control over it.
It’s not an issue of these middlemen themselves. It was an issue of technology.
We didn’t have the right tools.
Today we do.
There is a better way.
In order to achieve scaleable work relationships without sacrificing user sovereignty, we need a very different kind of system; one that exists at a lower level than today’s platforms. Blockchain technology represents a leap forward in enabling trust, financial transactions, and data distribution in a peer-to-peer and verifiable way. It serves as the perfect foundation to build a new way of working from the ground up; grounded by principles.
**User-owned data**
We need a system where users own and control the work data that they generate (and therefore, their reputations).
**Open data ecosystems**
We need a system where data and the infrastructure that produces it are extendable by third-party applications to create new services for users.
**Lower-level networks**
We need a system where networks of users live behind platform interfaces; enabling discovery and transactions between parties in an interface-agnostic way.
But how can we build this?
**The Past:**
[🟡 ](https://emojipedia.org/large-yellow-circle/)Reputations are sovereign but not scaleable
[🟡 ](https://emojipedia.org/large-yellow-circle/)We use brain-powered networks
**The Present:**
[🔴](https://emojipedia.org/large-red-circle/) Reputations are scaleable but not sovereign
[🔴](https://emojipedia.org/large-red-circle/) We use platform-enabled networks
**The Future:**
[🟢](https://emojipedia.org/large-green-circle) Reputations are both scaleable and sovereign
[🟢](https://emojipedia.org/large-green-circle) We use blockchain-based networks
Today, it’s possible for a global coordination layer for work to exist; replacing the role of middleman in discovery, payment, and trust, while empowering the next generation of applications to be built.
It’s not just possible; it’s inevitable.
We’ve been building this layer for one year; powered by an ecosystem of open-source developers who have lived the problems with work today, and are motivated to fix it. This week is the one-year anniversary since our first line of code was shipped at the #ETHCC hackathon in #Paris.
We’ve traveled the world to share our message and grow our movement thanks to donors who believe in our mission.
We’ve helped the first platforms go live, and on them, the first people have found work.
Now, we’re bringing this new way of work to the masses.
This is TalentLayer.
We are building something different.
We’re building something that will fundamentally change how every human on earth connects with one another.
We’re building a new way of working.

- **🎉🎉🎉 Introducing *InfluLENSer* 🎉🎉🎉**
The all-in-one platform that helps...
👩 content creators to find paid #sponsorships
🛍️ brands hire #influencers to spread their message on Lens
This weekend @quent043.lens, Raphael Tavarez, Joao Nuno, and Chloe George united to build #InfluLENSer during @ethglobal.lens #Lisbon! We built #InfluLENSer using a combo of @LensProtocol & @TalentLayer dev tools!
✨✨✨ We won the #1 @lensprotocol prize! ✨✨✨
On #InfluLENSer, companies can hire influencers to promote their brand and influencers can access more opportunities to monetize!
Hirers can create an organization and allow multiple people on your team to manage relationships with influencers thanks to #safe SDK. Essential for big businesses to hire influencers!
Hirers can post sponsored content opportunities for influencers to browse and apply for. Hirers can check out influencers' social profiles and see what sponsored gigs they've completed in the past.
Influencers submit proposals for sponsorship gigs. Next, hirers can approve and reserve money in escrow! Then, influencers can post to Lens right in the proposal administration page.
BTW: Remember when #KimKardashian got sued by the SEC for not disclosing a sponsored post? Many people don't know it's a law that you must to disclose when ppl pay you to post! Luckily, now, when hiring posts AND social posts are public on-chain, disclosure is automatic!
All in all, super proud of what the team built - InfluLENSer really shows the power of composability through leveraging @LensProtocol's social stack and @TalentLayer's work stack to build something that couldn't have existed in web-2.
Thank you @nader.lens @stani.lens @paris.lens@christina.lens and frens for all the support!!
Cheers 🥂🥂🥂
Check out the build & open-source code here: https://ethglobal.com/showcase/influlenser-dcvrj
PS: Interested in helping build InfluLENSer? We're seeking entrepreneurs and builders who want to carry on it's vision beyond just a hackathon project, with the support of the @talentlayer.lens team. Sounds like you? DM me.

- And.... we're live. @talentlayer.lens contracts deployed on #Polygon mainnet! Now for a funny path to mainnet story this morning #buildinpublic
PS: Minting of TalentLayer IDs starts at 4:04 PM UTC 🤩
Early AM at The Block Lisboa crypto coworking @romain__tl.lens, @mattiaa.lens and I I tried to deploy. Then Romain realized that #PolygonScan was under maintenance for a 2-hour block this morning so we couldn't verify our contracts!! So we had to wait a bit and re-deploy.
So we waited. Then we all clicked "enter" at the same time!!! Played "it's the final countdown" and all that.
And then the deployments kept failing! Each time a different contract. Was super silly. So we kept playing "it's the final countdown". I turned on the "3 hour loop" edition. And we kept clicking.
One time I accidentally clicked deploy before the others were able to click together. So we had to cancel that deployment because it would have been inequitable.
Finally - just about 20 minutes ago - ALL CONTRACTS WERE FINALLY DEPLOYED! Success. We're on mainnet.
Then about 20 seconds after we deployed everything successfully @kyubi.lens walked in from his flight! Right in time for the high five session.
LFGTM! Let's fucking go to mainnet!! #buildinpublic
- In honor of the @TalentLayer mainnet launch tomorrow, I re-published the "TalentLayer Manifesto" - a document I wrote in July of last year. It shows the real reason we've built what we've built. Read it here: https://kirstenpomales.com/manifesto.php
This was 22 days after I first hacked on TL at #ETHPrague.
19 days after Clément Lesaege told me to stop working along & build a team.
18 days after @owenbarnes.lens told me TL should be built as a movement, not a project.
13 days before I'd meet @romain__tl.lens, who'd become my cofounder.
I remember sending this to @realSasaMilic @temporalwave @QuidMint and frens after writing. Look how far we've come!!! Guys, we going to mainnet!!! Thx @mattiaa.lens for reminding me that the TL manifesto existed yesterday. #BuildInPublic throwback! LFG!

- Adventures in ETH Denver: @fluenceproject.lens, @developerdao.lens, and winning ETH VC Demo Day!
Greetings! Kirsten from TalentLayer here — the decentralized protocol for labor markets. Thanks to Fluence and Developer DAO, I was one of four TalentLayer team members who went to ETHDenver to hack! It was such an exciting event, and honestly one of the best weeks ever.
One of the most unique aspects of ETHDenver was the energy that the attendees brought to the event. People from all over the world were there, and everyone was so passionate about blockchain and crypto. It was amazing to see so many talented individuals come together to work on innovative projects.
As a team, we built BetteRPC, a decentralized RPC gateway that aims to accelerate the future of Web3 infrastructure decentralization. We used Fluence, a decentralized serverless platform and computing marketplace powered by blockchain economics, to create BetteRPC. Our project is able to achieve efficient, reliable and anonymous RPC calls by leveraging a peer-to-peer network powered by Fluence. We believe that this project will be crucial to the continued development of Web3 infrastructure.
Check out BetteRPC here!
In other news… one of the most exciting things that happened to me at ETHDenver was winning a pitch competition that was hosted at the event. More than 200 teams applied to participate in the competition, but only 30 were selected to present their projects. I was one of the three winners, and I was so proud of our team’s work.
At ETHDenver, I had the opportunity to meet so many amazing people in the crypto community. It was inspiring to see how passionate everyone was about building a decentralized future. I also had the chance to learn about new projects and technologies that are being developed in the space. It was a great opportunity to network and collaborate with other developers.
Finally, I want to thank Developer DAO and Fluence for sponsoring our team to attend ETHDenver. Without their support, we would not have been able to participate in this amazing event. I am so grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of this incredible experience. Also, thanks for the SICK WINTER SCARF!!!
LFG! Let’s Fluence Go! 🚀

- Our team @talentlayer.lens is stoked to accept a Next Steps Microgrant from Protocol Labs and #Filecoin Foundation! This grant will help us make all of our #IPFS data searchable (something HUGE for job and user discovery on TalentLayer-integrated platforms).
We’re almost done with this integration! Our team’s been hard at work improving searchability the past few weeks. So awesome to have the support of Filecoin and PL in this effort. This functionality will be present in the first 3 marketplaces launching to TalentLayer - WorkPod, DeLance, and HireVibes.

- When you have pooled liquidity for jobs and service providers at a protocol level, all of a sudden you make it possible for platforms to be built to serve only one side of the market...
👩💻 A developer boot camp makes a platform where their devs can search for roles and do work.
💼 A chamber of commerce makes a platform where its members can post work and hire.
Prior, it was impossible for platforms like this to exist - you HAD to build both sides of the market; hirers and workers. This is a HUGE barrier - it's costly.
Now, you can build a platform that serves the side that's easy for you and leave the other side to other platforms.
This will enable a Cambrian Explosion of services platforms. Like what Shopify was able to do for e-commerce.
💫 Anyone can start an e-commerce site.
✨ Anyone will be able to start a gig platform.
This is the idea behind @talentlayer.lens . We're watching it play out in real-time today. This quarter we have the first 2 marketplaces launching on one chain (Polygon) - we'll be able to see the first cross-platform transactions.
Let's radically evolve labor markets together ✊ @spanish-or-vanish.lens @romain__tl.lens @carllippert.lens @mattiaa.lens @memester.lens @chriscomrie.lens @alexgaodelance.lens
- Imagine being able to search for gigs, submit proposals, and get paid with escrow, without leaving a Lens social app. This is what's possible with the @talentlayer.lens x @lensprotocol integration!!! - ⭐ **Case Study: A Freelancer Collective’s Solution to Liquidity Issues: Pooling Jobs and Workers** ⭐
TLDR: This is a case study on how one prolific freelancing collective in France is solving its liquidity issues via pooling freelancers and jobs across hundreds of freelancer collectives.
At TalentLayer, enable marketplaces to overcome liquidity issues by pooling workers and jobs.
At our inception, we thought this was the first attempt at a network model like this.
We were wrong.
This fall our team came across a network of freelancer collectives based in France that have engineered an eerily similar solution after experiencing liquidity issues for many years. This case study serves as an incredible example of how pooling liquidity can enable more work to be done, more revenue to be made, and better experience for hirers and workers within freelance networks.
What’s the story?
First, we’ll explore the background of freelancing collectives in France.
Next, we’ll take a look at the liquidity issues they’ve been experiencing for decades (these issues sound so very familiar to the ones entrepreneurs experience when building gig marketplaces)!
Lastly, we’ll look at the solution that HappyDev came up with to solve their liquidity issues and the similar design principles we use at TalentLayer.
Let’s dive in.
⭐ **Freelancer Collectives in France: A Long-Running Trend** ⭐
France has a particularly large community of “freelancer collectives” — unions of freelancers that come together to operate under a single business entity to work on projects together, contract with bigger clients, and make legal compliance easier.
These freelancer collectives have existed for decades now; there are many hundreds that exist today, each ranging from a few dozen to a few hundred individual members.
These collectives have some very interesting characteristics, which we’ll explore below.
***➡️ They Stay Small To Keep Trust High***
They intentionally do not grow their membership beyond a few hundred members because they rely on all members knowing each other to maintain trusted work relationships and have an awareness of where each can be helpful to one another. By doing this, each collective member is able to easily loop in the appropriate person on any work that requires another person’s skill set.
For example, If a freelancer Jenny who specializes in Google Ads brings in a contract that requires not only Google Ads but also Linkedin Ads because Jenny knows that Alex, another member of the collective, specializes in Linkedin Ads, she reaches out to Alex to collaborate on the contract.
The maximum member size of a few hundred aligns with Dunbar’s Number, the notion that there exists a cognitive limit on human groups of about 150 individuals — we can only hold so many reputations in our heads at once.
***➡️* They Use Shared Financial Rails**
The freelancers in the collective, when they bring in a client, make the legal agreements for that contract between the collective’s entity and the client. Additionally, funds are wired from the client to the bank account of the collective and then are remitted to the freelancers who worked on the job.
***➡️* They Take a Fee To Cover Overhead**
The collectives take a fee from the work that freelance members bring in. This fee is used to maintain the business and financial setups for the collective’s entity.
***➡️* They are Collectively Owned**
These marketplaces are owned by the freelancers that make up each collective.
***➡️* Liquidity Issues in Freelancer Collectives**
Just like within gig marketplace platforms, freelancer collectives also experience issues with liquidity for jobs and talent; “the chicken and egg problem”.
Because the collectives are small, sometimes a job will come in that the collective doesn’t have all of the skills to handle.
For example, if our freelancer from the prior example, Jenny, works in a collective that doesn’t have a Linkedin Ads expert, she’d have to find a way to reduce the scope of the project or turn down the opportunity.
This is a huge loss for both the collective (who is missing out on making money from a lead) and for the hirer (who has to keep searching elsewhere).
⭐ **Meet HappyDev** ⭐
I came across HappyDev earlier this summer through one of TalentLayer’s team members. A few months later, I was fortunate enough to be able to hop on a call with one of their team members to learn about their story.
HappyDev started off as a freelancer collective that came together to form an entity and take bigger contracts together. The classic freelancer collective story. They grew rapidly to be one of the largest in the region; centered in Paris. They managed to get bigger and bigger contracts; focusing on major corporate contracts. Today, the collective has multi-million dollar annual revenues.
Over time, the collective’s operators realized they were getting a lot of inbound job leads that they could not serve with the skills they had internally in the collective. This, they saw as a missed opportunity.
There were plenty of other freelance collectives around that HappyDev was connected with, so they decided to start approaching them to make agreements to forward leads to each other — a way for workers in each collective to get matched with MORE of the best-fit work for them.
These agreements really too off! The other collectives loved the deal.
All of a sudden, the “collective of collectives” was growing — and they needed more tools to help them facilitate the referral agreements, payment remittances between collectives, and more.
So, they created a tool.
HappyDev created a referral web app where the different collectives could share work amongst their members; this included a few notable features including a reputation system and a jobs system. They intend to eventually build automated financial rails as well — currently, payments are manual through each collective’s banking infrastructure.
This tool was able to increase the number of jobs that all the collectives were able to fulfill.
In other words, they created a more liquid market for freelance work in France.
⭐ **When Blockchain & Labor Liquidity Unite** ⭐
The most fascinating part of HappyDev’s story is that, after operating for 8 years, they came to the same exact realization and referral-based economic model as TalentLayer to solve their liquidity issues.
Each collective is in a sense a marketplace, where work from hirers gets fulfilled by workers.
HappyDev’s referral and job-sharing tool is akin to TalentLayer; a method for marketplaces to pool liquidity of work and workers.
When blockchain technology and economic models like this unite, a whole new level of liquidity is possible for all labor platforms globally; with payment rails, dispute resolution, and cross-platform job posts automated, efficient, and uncensorable.
The success of HappyDev’s referral and job-sharing tool stands as a point of validation for TalentLayer’s vision; creating an interoperable protocol for more liquid labor markets; like SMTP for email.
We’re excited to continue bringing this vision to reality.
