✨Today's drop is an all time favorite of mine ✨
In the heart of the bustling metropolis, a homeless man sits amidst a flurry of pigeons, their wings beating in a rhythm that seems to echo the pulse of the city itself. Despite his circumstances, he finds solace and companionship in the feathered creatures that flock around him. In this chaotic urban landscape, he reminds us of the power of simple connections and the resilience of the human spirit. A reminder that even in the darkest times, there is still beauty and hope to be found.

- gm, i’ve noticed some recent posts here where people are talking about wanting more quality art.
how do you define good art?
Just think, if Artemisia Gentileschi, Monet, Frida Kaloh, Matisse, or Duchamp cared about what people said, we wouldn’t have their amazing art today.
Great art isn’t created by those who listen to the critics; it’s made by those brave enough to be criticized and hated, yet still create what they want.
Keep creating. Trust your instincts.

In the heart of Times Square, amidst the rain-streaked glow, a lone silhouette occupies a taxi cab, a silent observer of the city's ceaseless rhythm. Through the misted windows, his presence hints at stories untold, moments of solitude amidst the urban cacophony. In this fleeting moment captured in time, he becomes a symbol of anonymity and introspection, a solitary figure navigating the currents of metropolitan life.

We are made of words that cross the routes of our thoughts like cars that travel roads that always lead to the same place, the limits of our thought are those of language, then it is necessary to retake the symbols that our ancestors bequeathed us and reveal the magic that is hidden there, there are things that we must understand not with words that only surround their meaning, but contemplating them with the heart.

In the midst of the bustling city, where time seems to rush by in a blur of movement and noise, there stands a solitary figure, unaffected by the whirlwind around him. With a sense of serenity, he stands in quiet reflection, seemingly detached from the hurried pace of urban life. In this moment of stillness, amidst the ceaseless motion of the city, he finds a sanctuary of calm, a pause in the chaos to contemplate and observe the world rushing past.

- Ashore, 2022.
On a beach on the coast of Sierra Leone, West Africa
The wharf is busy with activity. The bright colors of people's boats and clothes, the sounds of trade, the smell of seared fish.
The clamor of fishermen sharing their catch and stories of the sea. I find a man telling his friends about a shark he battled that day.
He lifts his hand to show where the line cut deep into his hand.
“If a nor been for cut am, e been for ker am go!”
"Had I not cut him loose, the shark would have taken him away!"
His friend says.
The other fishermen laugh.
The baiter of sharks shrugs and twirls the the line in his hand, muttering about how he just needed a bigger hook.
It is a stones-throw away that I lens this moment. In stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the wharf is a fisherman between the boats and the sea, on a rock, fast asleep.
I am glad I found him.
And glad he found rest.
Ashore.

Another favorite from the vault that I've been saving for @lens/lens. In the heart of the West Village, where cobblestone streets whisper tales of bygone eras, a solitary figure moves along, mirrored in the inverted reflection of freshly washed windshield. Amidst the urban symphony of concrete and graffiti, the scene evokes a surreal dance between the tangible and the ethereal, inviting contemplation on the interconnectedness of our surroundings and our selves.
- Fun fact. I often stand at a location for upwards of an hour waiting for the right subject to come into frame.

some moments leave us changed forever in ways we could have never imagined. moments that we can try to recreate but may have no desire to because nothing will be as good as the first, & oh was this as perfect as could be. a ridiculously magical day in kyoto, my final of the maiden voyage to japan in 2018. the debut of tapping into parallel dimensions. the only time visiting a destination not using my camera. 6 hours of broad daylight with the phone in airplane mode left untouched. highest levels of presence. seeing sound. feeling energy pummeling through my body & out my fingertips. reading humans around me through vibrations only. an alignment of the universe that took many elements coming to fruition. ultimate peace in a place as spiritual as the fushimi inari shrine followed up with absolute mayhem in a cab ride from hell. one second i’m watching the busy, rush hour street of the city expand & contract in front of me & the next we’re whipping through a bamboo forest we had only seen as complete serenity on instagram. was i dreaming? warp speed through outer space the way these stalks were flying by on this path barely wide enough for a golf cart. i glance back at greg in the backseat, who was on the same adventure as me like “are we supposed to be driving through this?” as i turn around to face the front this disgruntled driver, with the most negative vibes i’ve ever felt from a japanese person, hits a girl with the left mirror, which folds back to absorb the impact. in the mirror i see her clutching her elbow as her man throws his arms in the sky, all the while keeps going like nothing happened. immediately i have thoughts sweep over me of having to file police reports & i instantly turn to the man signaling to stop. “arigato gozaimasu arigato gozaimasu!!” holding my hands up like NOW STOP. acting pissed that we weren’t grateful for his special tour he slams on the brakes, i jump out, dan pays him, he peels away, & all of a sudden it’s peaceful again. these giant bamboo stems blowing in the wind, creaking with every movement. no sign of the tourists that were hit, as we must have made it far enough for them to not see three gaijin in the vehicle. it was now that i finally turned on my camera that had been hanging around my neck all day without use. within minutes a cab from another era comes up behind us, passes, & those who were once in the way are back in the path as if the car drove right through them a la the old subway train in ghostbusters. i snapped. another gift from the universe but this time on quite possibly the craziest, most enlightening day of my life in a metaphoric way i could have never drawn up. we eventually exited the woods & ate dinner at a restaurant that had the most mystical restroom i’ve ever stepped foot in, i put headphones in with kendrick lamar - damn, we wandered back to the airbnb via some trains, i took one look at IG & asked myself “what are you even doing with this?” & proceeded to archive/delete everything / unfollow everyone. who the fuck are all these people??? it was the beginning of the end of subjecting myself to systems that others have built to control us through these computers in our hands.
6 years later i believe we have what we needed to escape those systems. 6 years later i returned to kyoto for the first time & created zero images with a camera. purely experience. that’s the way it will stay forever, so anything from this particular day remains rare & largely untouched even today.

My latest 1/1 drop is another all time favorite. This one took quite a bit of planning and even more patience. If you're familiar with the Oculus in NYC you know how busy it could be, especially during this time of day when the sun shines through directly overhead. Waiting for the right subject was key here. After 2 consecutive days of trying, he finally emerged, alone in the shadows, and well in motion 💨

2022/2023 were the hardest years of my life. worse than covid. freelance work was diminished to nearly zero somehow but everywhere i looked around me in NY or LA i was surrounded by wealth. young children without a care in the world frolicking around drowning in debauchery. everyone is an “artist” on social media living in 5k/month apartments mommy & daddy pay for, taking jobs for 75% less than their predecessors, or free, then complaining that nobody wants to pay, all the while hearing about inflation and economic struggle daily created a warped reality. what was reality? as soon as japan re-opened to tourists i put my apartment up for sublet. my NYC sublet profit was effectively paying my entire tokyo rent. it was the first time i was ever so slightly allowed to breathe. to just “be.” during this time i’ve created my best work. my superrare genesis. multiple nifty gateway collections. my brain was on fire. returning to america was painful. i knew i couldn’t continue with life there. stepping foot off the plane back in the mainland cost $ 100 just for air. while many things were not aligning there was a glimmer of hope when a mutual friend notified me of an open room in his flat for the new year. at the same time i was notified of being evicted from the lower east side studio i had turned into my home. debt was piling up. life shit was pouring down. my light at the end of the tunnel was sitting down on the plane back to tokyo on jan 1. what i had to get through before that would probably destroy most people, but what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. i’ve been through so much between 2010-present that most things just bounce off of me. this image is from my adventures with @lens/alimo last winter through one of the many impressive tunnels that exist in hokkaido, the north island. i can’t think of anything more metaphoric that’s ever presented itself to me about what i was living through. akari is a japanese name that means “subtle light in darkness.”
