The choreographer and I both love music with layered rhythms. This patch has the right amount of bounce to it where I can add another line and play with polyrhythms.
I'm working to collect the right palette before I build the entire piece.

Next month my piece colorem will be performed by the Washington Ballet at the Kennedy Center! We needed a recording of my music since there's no orchestra performing with these shows.
With a limited budget, I had to get creative. Colorem is scored for string orchestra, two percussionists, and piano. Two of my friends recorded all of the string parts and I took care of the percussion/piano. I've never edited a project this large before so it's taken me a long time to get the mix just right. And I've had plenty of help from @lens/deanjackson who gives me tips and tricks that make things a whole lot easier!

Some reflections to start the week.
The IFPI's "Engaging with Music" report for 2023 offers valuable insights into the diverse ways in which people incorporate music into their daily activities.
Here are excerpts from the 2023 IFPS report:
Prepared by @lens/dominiktomczyk
π **Commuting to work or school**: 45%
π **Driving in the car**: 50%
π **Doing housework**: 39%
π **Exercising or at the gym**: 33%
π **Relaxing or unwinding**: 41%
And my question is: how many % of people simply dedicate time to listening to music as a art form? This report shows that music has become a utilitarian object and has ceased to be an art. Music as a backdrop for activities, music as a 'therapist', music as an integral part of our lives. Music seems to have lost its status as art because of this. In addition, an art worth paying for. Maybe that's why it's so hard for artists to make a living from music today, because it has no value in our eyes, it's just a filler. Today, when it takes 10 minutes for an AI to degenerate a song, why should I pay someone for their work?
What are the strategies to bring music back to the status of ART?
What do you think?

I posted the score for this part of Tilt the other day. The musicians have freedom to play a set of loops in any tempo, register, and order. Every performance is different and I love to see how the musicians interact with each other and with the dancer during this free section!

- A little peek at the score for Tilt πΉπ»
I love structuring my music with loops. I think it's a fun way for a listener to get inside the music. This section is aleatoric β the musicians can choose whichever loop they want to play in any order and at different tempos.
I wrote it so that they should all work together no matter which one is played!

- Rehearsal no. 2 of my piece Tilt! π»πΉ
The violinist, Christina, had an idea to create a piece inspired by Dalcroze eurhythmics. We all took a eurhythmics class where we explored different methods of physically embodying music.
I was struck most by our opening exercise - the instructor had us start from a standing position and lean to the side as far as we could before we had to stumble out. It gave me the opening idea for this piece! The violin and piano have high repeated notes that play faster until the momentum builds enough that they "fall" to the bottom of their instrument.

Here is the first music I sent to my choreographer for our new ballet!
I wanted to create a cavernous, expansive sound. I'm starting this collab with finding the right timbres. After I have a large enough palette I'll begin to compose and layer the music.

- Thinking about differentiating between my $Bonsai and MATIC collect posts.
I like the idea of Bonsai collects being more behind-the-scenes and work in progress content. Something about the ethos of bonsai makes me want to focus on the process of a piece and let people in a little more.
MATIC collects will be reserved for studio recordings and final products.
At least that's what I'm planning for now! Anyone else have thoughts about this?
