- **`130 . Escher High on Mushrooms (Collectible)`**
**Title:** Escher High on Mushrooms
**Kind:** Spherical perspective, photo montage and collage
**Date and place:** 14/04/2023, Berlin, Germany 🇩🇪
**Contest:** ArtHack - Redefining Iconic Artworks For The Digital Age", the first online exhibition of Art From Future on the Lens Protocol @lensprotocol.lens, in partnership with the Museum of Lens @molens.lens Exhibition curated by Jessy Jeanne @jessyjeanne.lens & Armin Hoori @arminhoori.lens
**Invited artists:** @marzipanphysics.lens @cybershakti.lens @mazemari.lens @andresbriceno.lens @whitecloud.lens @lufoart.lens
**Statement**
Escher High on Mushrooms (EHM) appropriates the famous lithography "Hand with Reflecting Sphere" (1935) by M. C. Escher ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand_with_Reflecting_Sphere ). In the original artwork, Escher uses a spherical reflection to show himself and the inside of his room. EHM imitates the same pose but instead of reflecting the outside physical world in a pictographic way, it reflects an inner, dreamy, whimsical world. The artwork in the sphere is a spherical perspective called “Elizabete: Hat, Fruit or Flute” and it can be navigated 360 degrees at: https://www.lufo.art/VT-virtual-tour/elizabete-hat-fruite-or-flute.html
EHM intends to be a sarcastic joke: creativity does not rely neither on substances nor in alcohol, but on both the outside and the inside research about who we are.
**Technique**
The spherical perspective has been handmade first with pencil, then outlined with ink and finally painted with watercolours. The collage was made on Photoshop using a photography made with my mobile phone and the background from the original artwork repeated as a pattern and digitally coloured.

**Work explanation -** aalbec's artwork is a digital reinterpretation of Francis Bacon's "Study after Velázquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X" series, which featured around 50 variants of the classic painting executed throughout the 1950s and early 1960s. aalbec's work is inspired by the distortions and unique interpretations of Bacon's series, which played with the boundaries between the classic and the modern. Using stable diffusion and revisiting moments from the history of pixel art and profile picture (PFP) culture, aalbec's artwork creates a futuristic, technological evolution of Bacon's original series. The artwork features a robotic pope leaving the screen, suggesting a new, exciting evolution of religious iconography. Like Bacon's series, aalbec's work try explores the human condition through its distorted depictions of the pope's face, which suggest a sense of anxiety and vulnerability in the figure of power. Through the use of AI technology, aalbec's work challenges viewers' perceptions of traditional art and tries to create a powerful, emotional impact.
**Short bio -** aalbec is a new artist who has a background in software engineering and is just starting to produce artwork. He sees himself as a researcher-artist interested in exploring philosophical and scientific subjects through his art. His work often focuses on the interaction between the artwork and the spectator. Currently, aalbec is particularly interested in the intersection of artificial intelligence and art, and how AI can be used to create more engaging and interactive art experiences. He believes that AI technology will continue to have a significant impact on the art world, and he is eager to be at the forefront of this exciting new trend.

**My Work-**
*This is a modern interpretation of Frida Kahlo!*
If Frida were to be living amongst us, I reckon she'd be sitting in her comfy shorts in the afternoons as she sat by the window catching her breath between chores - looking at herself in the mirror - or selfie camera on tripod - making a self portrait that would pass off as a 24 hour only IG story.
Making art was important because it meant documentation of a time, memory or milestone, information and clues about a bygone era. But most importantly, only a few were equipped to make art. Artists were a delightful breed. Most good ones, also forgotten.
In a social set-up where everything is over documented, HOW ARE WE PICKING OUR CHAMPIONS? Who is worth remembering, as a collective?
Happy Collecting >>> #LMCC #ArtHack
- **Lady with an Ermine**
A reinterpretation of the work "Lady with an Ermine" in which the ermine becomes part of the lady's clothing and the lady takes a back seat, a reference to the mask and how in the modern digital age the form is confused with the substance at points where the virtual becomes more real than the real itself. The design of the clothing is inspired by the futurism of Alexander Mcqueen and Zaha Hadid.
A future where the organic and the synthetic become undifferentiated, a parallel world where objects can also be life. The aesthetics of the "at once" also has always been part of photography and now also of the art that is made with AI, think of the tension between the unfinished and the irreversible that is characteristic of the photograficity, the same happens with the images that are generated with AI, this means that these images also possess photograficity especially when they go through a process of development as is the case.
To take this "at once" a little further I wanted to bring up paradoxes that express the tension between the organic and the inorganic, the living and the inanimate, the vital and the banal, the mask and the self...

- Another great example of Appropriation in Art: *Erased de Kooning Drawing* by Robert Rauschenberg 1953:
"From 1951 to 1953, Robert Rauschenberg made a number of artworks that explore the limits and very definition of art. These works recall and effectively extend the notion of the artist as creator of ideas, a concept first broached by Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968) with his iconic readymades of the early twentieth century. With *Erased de Kooning Drawing* (1953), Rauschenberg set out to discover whether an artwork could be produced entirely through erasure—an act focused on the removal of marks rather than their accumulation.
Rauschenberg first tried erasing his own drawings but ultimately decided that in order for the experiment to succeed he had to begin with an artwork that was undeniably significant in its own right. He approached Willem de Kooning (1904–1997), an artist for whom he had tremendous respect, and asked him for a drawing to erase. Somewhat reluctantly, de Kooning agreed. After Rauschenberg completed the laborious erasure, he and fellow artist Jasper Johns (b. 1930) devised a scheme for labeling, matting, and framing the work, with Johns inscribing the following words below the now-obliterated de Kooning drawing:
ERASED de KOONING DRAWING
ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG
1953
The simple, gilded frame and understated inscription are integral parts of the finished artwork, offering the sole indication of the psychologically loaded act central to its creation. Without the inscription, we would have no idea what is in the frame; the piece would be indecipherable.
In 2010 SFMOMA used a range of digital capture and processing technologies to enhance the remaining traces of the original de Kooning drawing. This effort was intended not only to address our instinctive curiosity about what Rauschenberg erased but also to enable us to better understand what he grappled with, literally and figuratively, when he decided to erase the work of an artist he admittedly idolized. Because de Kooning used erasure heavily in his own drawings, it is possible that some traces made visible through this technology were actually erased by him as part of the original drawing, before it entered Rauschenberg’s hands. However, the resulting image reveals a field of marks that is far from a finished drawing or even a focused study. Instead we see de Kooning at work, in process, thinking with his pencil and charcoal. Multiple figures fill the sheet, oriented in two directions. The female figure at lower left is likely related to the Woman series, with which de Kooning was deeply involved from 1950 to 1955.
The sight of this approximation of de Kooning’s drawing ultimately does not transform our understanding of Rauschenberg’s finished artwork. The power of *Erased de Kooning Drawing* derives from the allure of the unseen and from the enigmatic nature of Rauschenberg’s decision to erase a de Kooning. Was it an act of homage, provocation, humor, patricide, destruction, or, as Rauschenberg once suggested, celebration? *Erased de Kooning Drawing* eludes easy answers, its mysterious beginnings leaving it open to a range of present and future interpretations."

**Short artist bio**
My work revolves mainly around painting, drawing and loop animation. It is subversive and takes cues from social media and meme culture to challenge current ideas of femininity, beauty and the aesthetic. My work started off as purely physical painting and now is evolving to mixing it with AI. I use artificial intelligence to blend multiple images and recreate a dream-like atmosphere, always featuring (not so cute) girly girls.
**Statement**
For this exhibition "ArtHack" I decided to create an artwork based on Marcel Duchamp's L.H.O.O.Q because it immediately reminded me that one of my girlfriends uses this reference as a pseudonym in web3.
I am very interested in performance art, and especially through extra girly celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Myriam Klink or Megan Fox. This artwork titled "Bitch" is a parody of an already existing parody - a sort of performance on the blockchain 💜
What if the "Mona Lisa" was the Paris Hilton of her time?

- One of the most famous example of Appropriation in Art is "L.H.O.O.Q. or La Joconde" by Marcel Duchamp:
"In 1919, Duchamp performed a seemingly adolescent prank using a postcard that represented the ideal of feminine beauty, Leonardo da Vinci's *Mona Lisa*. He drew a mustache and goatee on her face and added the letters "L.H.O.O.Q." The caption combines Duchamp's gleeful sense of wit with his love of wordplay: eliding the letters in French sounds like, "Elle a chaud au cul" ("There is fire down below"). The image trespasses traditional boundaries of appropriation by presenting a reproduction, however tarted up, as an original work of art. The masculinized female introduces the theme of gender reversal, which was popular with Duchamp, who adopted his own female pseudonym, Rrose Sélavy, pronouced "Eros, c'est la vie" ("Eros, that's life"). *La Joconde* instantly became his most famous readymade and a symbol for the international Dada movement, which rebelled against everything that art represented, particularly the appeal to tradition and beauty. The term "rectified and readymade" indicates that the artist has altered a found, mass-produced object."

- PART 1: A little bit of history by curator @arminhoori.lens:
Artistic appropriation, like found object art, is defined as “the purposeful copying, borrowing, and altering of previous imagery, objects, and concepts as an aesthetic method.” The act of appropriation in art highlights issues of uniqueness, legitimacy, and ownership, and is part of the lengthy modernist heritage of art that calls into question the essence or meaning of art itself.
Many painters in the 19th century made allusions to past artists’ pieces or topics. *For instance, Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres produced Madame Moitessier’s portrait in 1856. The unusual posture was influenced by the renowned antique Roman artwork Herakles Finding His Son Telephas (early 2nd century BCE).*
As a result, the creator established a connection for both his subject as well as the Olympian goddess. Similarly, Vincent van Gogh can be identified by instances of works influenced by Delacroix, Jean Francois Millet, or Japanese images in his personal possession.
However, **appropriation art as an art form may be traced back to Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso’s cubist assemblages and collages from 1912 onward**, in which genuine things such as newsprint were used to symbolize themselves. Picasso placed a strip of oilcloth onto the painting in 1912. Following pieces, such as Guitar, Newspaper, Glass, and Bottle (1913), in which the artist utilized news clippings to build shapes, are examples of early assemblage that became associated with synthetic cubism.
The two painters included elements of the “actual world” into their paintings, provoking debate over the perceived significance and artistic expression.
- *PART 2 (coming soon)*
@molens.lens @jessyjeanne.lens
- "I'm interested in coupling the ingratiation of wishful thinking with the criticality of knowing better. To use the device to get people to look at the picture, and then to displace the conventional meaning that an image usually carries with perhaps a number of different readings." - Barbara Kruger, 1987
The exhibition that @jessyjeanne.lens and @arminhoori.lens are curating invites artists to appropriate works of art from history, and create new works based on them.
Appropriation is a post-modern artistic technique that involves the re-use and re-contextualization of existing elements to create new works. In many cases, the original object remains available in its original form, and the artist creates something fresh by re-contextualizing the borrowed imagery.
The history of appropriation in art can be traced back to the early 20th century, with artists like Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso using artifacts from non-art environments in their work. Marcel Duchamp's readymades in 1915 and Robert Rauschenberg's "combines" in the 1950s are also examples of appropriation.
**Our statement for this exhibition is: "Appropriation is the art of the remix, and the ultimate expression of our culture's obsession with reinterpreting the past in order to make sense of the present."**
In a world where everything seems to be constantly changing, appropriation allows us to create something new out of what has already been done. By reinterpreting the past, we can understand and make sense of the present, and use this understanding to shape our future. Appropriation allows us to pay homage to the artists that have come before us, while also creating something new and relevant to our current cultural landscape.
This exhibition is an exploration of the power of appropriation, and the many ways in which artists can use this technique to create new and exciting works of art. It invites viewers to consider the meaning and significance of appropriation in art, and to reflect on the role that appropriation plays in shaping our understanding of the past, present, and future.

- you will soon hear from me.
- GM my #lensfrens; So @jessyjeanne.lens and I are curating this amazing exhibition with the help of @molens.lens and @artfromfuture.lens on @lensprotocol
The whole concept is based on appropriation in art. But what does appropriation mean in art?
"Appropriation refers to the act of borrowing or reusing existing elements within a new work. Post-modern appropriation artists, including Barbara Kruger, are keen to deny the notion of ‘originality’. They believe that in borrowing existing imagery or elements of imagery, they are re-contextualizing or appropriating the original imagery, allowing the viewer to renegotiate the meaning of the original in a different, more relevant, or more current context.
In separating images from the original context of their own media, we allow them to take on new and varied meanings. The process and nature of appropriation has been considered by anthropologists as part of the study of cultural change and cross-cultural contact." - Hayley A. Rowe
I really love the concept of denying originality, so I want to see how artists on Lens challenge artworks from history and appropriate them. We will publish the exhibition statement and further resources later.
I really hope to see works by @visualswithsam.lens @grams.lens @chaoticmonk.lens @memester.lens @gabriela.lens @arterlioz.lens @andresbriceno.lens @khudyakova.lens @ryanfox.lens @elliepritts.lens and other Great artists on #lens and I hope @stani.lens @bradorbradley.lens and @christina.lens Supports us too.

- Tonight is 'Chaharshanbe Suri (چهارشنبهسوری)' in Iran. Here's a description of this celebration by ChatGPT:
Chaharshanbe Suri is a Persian festival that is celebrated on the eve of the last Wednesday before the Persian New Year, known as Nowruz. This festival is also known as the Festival of Fire, and it is one of the most important and popular festivals in Iran and some other countries in the region.
During Chaharshanbe Suri, people light bonfires in the streets and jump over them while singing traditional songs and shouting "zardi-ye man az to, sorkhi-ye to az man," which translates to "my yellow is yours, your red is mine." The tradition of jumping over the fire is said to bring good luck and ward off evil spirits and illnesses.
The roots of Chaharshanbe Suri can be traced back to ancient Persia, where fire was considered a symbol of purity, light, and divinity. The festival was originally celebrated as a Zoroastrian tradition, but it has been adopted by Muslims and other religious groups in Iran over the years.
Today, Chaharshanbe Suri is a colorful and joyous celebration that brings people together to celebrate the coming of spring and to enjoy traditional foods and music.
