- Around the same time England adopted autumn, the first-ever British American colonists were voyaging to North America. With them they brought the words fall and autumn, and while the former fell out of fashion overseas, it solidified itself in the local vernacular by the time America won its independence. Today, using both words to describe the season before winter is still a uniquely American behavior.
- In the 1500s, English speakers began calling the seasons separating the cold and warm months “fall of the leaf” or “spring of the leaf,” or “fall” and “spring” for short. Both terms were simple and evocative, but for some reason, only spring had staying power in Britain. By the end of the 1600s, autumn, from the French word autompne and the Latin autumnus, had overtaken fall as the standard British term for the third season.
- According to Dictionary.com, fall isn’t a modern nickname that followed the more traditional autumn. The two terms are actually first recorded within a few hundred years of each other.
- September 23, 2023, marks the start of a new season—but what exactly you should call that season depends on where in the world you are. In Great Britain, the third season of the year usually has only one name: autumn.

- UK researchers have homed in on a human gene implicated in thwarting most bird flu viruses from infecting people. A team of scientists from the University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research studied hundreds of genes normally expressed by human cells, comparing the genes’ behaviour during infection with either human seasonal viruses or avian① flu viruses. They zeroed in on② a gene called BTN3A3, expressed both in the upper and the lower human respiratory tract. Nicknamed B-force by the researchers, the gene was found to block the replication of most strains③ of bird flu in human cells. However, the gene’s antiviral activity failed to protect against seasonal human flu viruses. All the human influenza pandemics, including the 1918-19 global flu pandemic, were caused by influenza viruses that were resistant to BTN3A3, and therefore the gene appears to be a key factor in whether any bird flu strain has human pandemic potential, the researchers said. - After seven years of construction, work on the world’s longest high-altitude road tunnel was completed on Wednesday in the Tibet autonomous region. The Gokarla Tunnel is a key section of the Lhasa-Tsethang Highway. The altitudes at the entrances of the tunnel are 4,248 meters and 4,117 meters above sea level. With one lane of the tunnel stretching① 12,790 meters and the other 12,780 meters, the tunnel has been hailed② as the world’s longest at such an altitude. The average altitude of the tunnel is 4,300 meters, and the geological conditions along the route are extremely complex. Linking the regional capital Lhasa with the region’s southern city of Lhokha, the Lhasa-Tsethang Highway is expected to open to the public by the end of the year, and reduce the travel time between the cities to about one hour from three hours at present. “It will fundamentally change local transportation, not only greatly improving travel, but also driving the development of tourism, agriculture and animal husbandry③ along the route,” said Zhou Xiaobing, a leader of the project. Despite the partnership, Nadella said last week that Microsoft doesn’t control OpenAI. Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s corporate vice president, said ChatGPT will offer Bing as the default③ search engine but did not say when it will be available. “ChatGPT is the fastest growing consumer app we have ever seen,” Nadella said. - New York City is sinking under the collective weight of all of its buildings, a new study has found. This gradual process could spell① trouble for a city around which the sea level has been rising more than twice as fast as the global rate—and is projected to rise between 8 inches and 30 inches by 2050. What’s more, scientists expect more frequent and extreme rainfall events such as nor’easters and hurricanes due to the human-fueled climate crisis. “We’re a ways off from the ocean simply moving in,” said lead study author Tom Parsons, a research geophysicist at the US Geological Survey. “But we’ve had a couple of major hurricane events with Sandy and Ida in New York where heavy rainfall caused inundation② in the city, and some of the effects of urbanization③ have allowed water to come in.” (CNN)

Taking the Green Pill
======================================

======================================
What is this "Green Pill" about?
It is about the choice for choosing to coordinate and believe in Regenerative CryptoEconomics by @owocki.lens
Famously quoted by @owocki.lens : "All coordination is a choice. No outcome is preordained. We must coordinate to leverage our gifts + capitalize on this opportunity for the benefit of humanity at large."
It may be hard to follow at this point, as many about coordinate this and that.
So what is all this coordination about? Let's start with coordination failure, just like what @ameensol is saying about Slaying Moloch👹.
Our real enemy is the grey pill = coordination failures.
Coordination failures are what caused for example "Climate change" and "underfunded & insecure digital infrastructure".
Coordination failure occurs when a group of humans could achieve a desirable outcome by working together, but fail to do so because they don't cooperate.
Our real solution of choice for coordination: "Web3".
Web3 is a global immutable (incorruptible), transparent, programmable mechanism for human resource allocation.
Web3 is a schelling point for the hopeful, we have gathered in the Web3 movement to build a better world.
Into the Quadratic Lands.
The Quadratic Lands is a mythical place where we've rewritten the laws of economics to support pulic goods, provent coordination failures and create human thriving.
Thanks for reading this far!
