- **These are not empty cages: these are free animals! For World Animal Day**
**Forgotten Songs**, created by **Michael Thomas Hill**, is a captivating public artwork nestled in **Angel Place, Sydney**. Originally conceived as part of the **2009 Sydney Laneway Temporary Art Scheme**, this installation gained immense popularity. Consequently, in **2011**, it was transformed into a permanent feature as part of the **9 million dollar** laneway installations.
The installation itself is a poignant interplay of past and present, juxtaposing large and small, predator and prey. **Forgotten Songs** invites contemplation of Sydney's history, its evolving landscape, and the sustainability challenges posed by urban development. Let's delve into the details:
**Birdsong Canopy**: Suspended above Angel Place, a canopy of **120 empty birdcages** filters down the songs of fifty birds that once graced central Sydney. These avian melodies gradually faded as European settlement encroached upon their habitat. During the day, the calls of various bird species echo through the air, while at night, a different set of nocturnal birds takes center stage.
**Evolution and Adaptation**: The installation reflects how Sydney's fauna has adapted to coexist with urbanization. While some native bird species have retreated to the city margins, opportunistic birds like the white ibis and sulphur-crested cockatoos thrive amidst the hustle and bustle. These are the familiar calls we often hear today, if we can discern them above the city's traffic.
**Endangered Species**: Habitat loss remains a significant threat to bird survival. Currently, **129 bird species native to New South Wales** are formally listed as either extinct or threatened. The recordings in **Forgotten Songs** represent the songs of birds that once graced central Sydney. From the Eastern Whipbird to the Powerful Owl, these avian voices evoke nostalgia for a time when their melodies filled the city's air.
**Nocturnal Serenades**: As night falls, the Australian Owlet-nightjar, Powerful Owl, Southern Boobook, Barn Owl, Tawny Frogmouth, and White-throated Nightjar take over the symphony, weaving their nocturnal magic.
**Forgotten Songs** serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between urban development and the preservation of our natural heritage. The echoes of these forgotten melodies linger, inviting us to reflect on the intertwined relationship between humans and the environment
- FICTION BREAK
He pushed himself into the tube train during rush hour and stood there squeezed between two other men in business suits for a few stations…
She was stuck in a traffic jam in her Mini singing along to R.E.M…
By the time he was out of that full train his linen jacket was all wrinkled. He got out of the tube and looked up at the pouring rain. “F*ck my life” he muttred …
She turned on the windshield wipers… She almost passed the crossroad when the light changed to red again and made her push the breaks. “Damn!”
He was passing the street when he turned and looked in her direction…
Their eyes locked and in those few seconds that felt ages both got memory flashbacks…
Her opening the door
Him screwing someone else
Three horrified pair of eyes
Shouts, tears snd an inevitable breakup
In those few seconds they went back five years…
The car honks brought both of them back to the wet crossroad…
He sped up his steps…
Light changed…
She drove away…
Neither of them will no longer have to wonder what would have happened if they had met again.

- Hello there!
- THE JOURNALIST THAT BTC-ED TOO HARD
Maybe it’s just an illusion, but I believe that if you looked back and found out more about what the space has been like before you joined it, navigating would be easier.
Which is why this time I spoke to someone, who’s been in this space way before many of us.
In this episode I speak to Rizzn - who according to his Twitter bio is a journalist and crypto-anarchist.
We discussed:
- What brought him to this space and what kept him here for so long
- How much has the culture changed since the early days of Bitcoin and what it was like at the very beginning?
- Bitcoin: is it store of value or means of exchange?
- DAOs
- Ross Ulbricht’s story
- Why did he end up in prison
- How does the future of this space look like
