Madagascar Road Trip, Day 2/3, Antsirabe-Miandrivazo 🚙
We didn't get up on time (read that as "got used to it," Igor always wakes up before us and goes crazy that we women don't get out of bed for half an hour and then take another half-hour to get ready), so the plan to drive directly from Antsirabe to Morondava was changed because we wouldn't reach the hotel before dark. It takes at least 10-11 hours to drive from Antsirabe to Morondava, which means you have to start no later than 7. There's no other option than to take a break and stay overnight in a larger town along the way, and that's Miandrivazo.
To tell you that we saw something particularly interesting on this stretch, we didn't. Typical Madagascan landscapes, kilometers of green and red, markets, tuk-tuks, pus-pus (Madagascar's version of a rickshaw), zebu (Madagascar's hump-backed cows), houses made of mud and thatch, workshops making Madagascan souvenirs (from zebu horns, recycled materials)... And one man in a Vlahović jersey (photo 8) 😁 I've seen Modric's jersey quite often, but the surname of one of our national team players on a shirt in the middle of nowhere, now for the first time.
In fact, we saw something interesting, and that's people looking for gold. I imagined this process completely differently, and before you see it on the stories, I'll try to vividly describe it here (photo 9 shows a man engaged in this activity). People squat in a very muddy river. With large containers, they grab mud from it, "knead" and spin it with their hands. Then comes the sorting and sifting. Nothing was clear to us until we got very close, and on small plates into which they transferred the sand from large containers, we saw yellow traces. These are particles of gold, and they sparkle clearly in the sun. If they are lucky, these people can find about 1 g of gold per day, with a maximum of 3-4.
Our driver Setra, told us about life in Madagascar on the way, which, as you can already see, is not easy at all.
What struck us the most is the fact that primary education is not mandatory, and many children do not go to school, as could be seen during the trip. A working day, and many school-age children on the street. The reason is the cost of education. School costs are around €2 per month, and parents can't even afford that much...
